That's one of the chineseoated imports. Not sure might be what is known as "skip white". Google that and "ready to run" and "all in one." I "think" I know that they use a module out of a Holden? Australian For the money they cost (inexpensive) and the fact that they are a one piece deal, they seem to have a pretty fair reputation.
Looks like an HEI distributor with a female cap. There is a few sellers of these. HEI coils usually don't go bad, they either work or don't. Wires are considered a maintanence item so depends on how old or how many miles are on them, an upgrade or replacement may make the engine run better.
Which can be used with almost any coil so it's possible a coil alone could make a good difference.
What coil does it have on it?
If it's not an HEI design coil it could very well be wasting the capabilities of that distributor.
This is not and should not be called "HEI" in my opinion. HEI so far as I'm concerned is what has come out of the original GM HEI, period. This is an ignition module "out of something" as I said I think Holden. There is no ballast.
skip white..pro comp...speedmaster...tsp....call them what you want....all probably made at the same factory in china...
Got one in my 88 Dodge 318 excuse me 5.2L D250 pickup truck....two wires hook up one to + side of coil and one to - of coil...must provide coil with 12 volts...using pro comp E coil......works great...set initial timing at 14 degrees...
Ningboa is the Chinese manufacturer. Skip White Performance of TN is one ebay seller, and usually the cheapest. I recall $65 for BB and $45 for SB engines. Slant owners are still waiting for one. It should give a spark similar to GM's HEI, so not a bad term to use. No ballast resistors are used with modern ignitions, c.a. 1980+. Mopar had similar, but integral with their notorious "spark computer" or "lean burn".
