What Is It?

I am rebuilding a 1984 360. I found this thing attached to the camshaft retainer plate. Anybody know what it is? BTW, there was no oil slinger. Is that normal for a 360 of this vintage? Thanks.

That sends oil to the timing chain.

It serves two purposes. It directs oil to the chain and makes a hell of a racket when there is enough slack in the chain to warrant chain replacement....

Why is the top pass side bolt different?? In some engines that bolt had a hole thru the center for oil seepage....looks like it might have broke and been replaced??

x2. I thought you had to have that bolt to help keep the timing chain oiled and alive???

that bolt aint factory.I dont think i have ever seen a zinc bolt inside a block.

Bingo, thanks TB, I knew the bolt werent factree...I would make sure to swap to a grade 8 bolt to be on the safe side.
