What is the best alternator and voltage regulator replacement brand? I have a 1968 Dart GTS with the late model VR style.

I like the stock Mopar parts myself, unless you need some extra output for some reason. Then you might need wiring and/or relay work too.

hey Steve i bought a four pack on ebay i think it worked out to 16 bucks a piece this was a few years ago great reg rock steady voltage i set mine to 13.8 v

Thanks Aron, without hijacking OP's thread, how did u determine what to set it at?

there is a small screw on the back of the vr to adjust one way for more voltage the other way for less . i use a multi meter on the battery to adjust .

Is it on the alt. If it's regular external reg. how's it a one wire?

You may also consider having your original alternator rebuilt. Many rebuilds these day are poor. First one out the box didn't even spin before I left the store. Second one works, but always sounded a little noisy. My original has a very internitant short . Yours being a '68 if original would also have the single wire field with a mechanical regulator. Might consider upgrading to the isolated field with newer regualtor. Requires some mods, but not too complicated. Also might consider upgrading the ammeter wiring.

I'm old and set in my ways like a stone. I don't like the newer, electronic stuff, no matter who preaches they are better. I hawk ebay for old mechanical NOS made in USA parts, like Napa Echlin, OLD Standard Ignition, factory Chrysler and stuff like that. You can still find original cars with factory originals 60 plus years old THAT STILL WORK. Why on Earth would you want anything else? Just one old codger's opinion.

If I need an alternator, starter, switch, etc. there are two local shops that rebuild these units. I would imagine there is one or more in your area. They take the core and sell you another unit or rebuilt yours.
