Just though id post up some pics :angel9: any sugestions on where to go to get a rebuild kit, like pistons, rings, gaskets and such, i need a timing chain too. I saw on summit there kit with kb hypertu. pistons are 399.00 or so. sugestions? Comments, concerns.

Looks like you are getting allot dun in class,
Is the 340 ready to be used or are you going to rebuild it too?
You mite get better prices if you price them together.
Is this your first eng rebuild?
Take your time and enjoy. You will always remwmber this one.

Nicely done. Now put it all away and clean off that bench! New engine work starts with CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. Ask the shop "why?" a lot. They will become your best friend. The kits are nice, but I like getting the parts thru the shop in many cases. It may be a little more, but you dont bring your own potato and salad to a restaurant when you order a steak. It also means if something comes in wrong or defective, it's thier problem, not yours.

Moper has a very good point. If your doing it at home, have the machine work done to the block and rotating assembly first, then order. But also be perpare to stop and wait for parts ship in error as well as the possible added machine work if all does not end up in spec.

the 340 will need a complete rebuild, pistons needs about everything, dad mentions it has a slight knock when its cold what do you guys think it could be? He doesnt 'rod' on it or anything. Thanks for the tips and help guys i'll keep u posted

It's old, slightly worn, and cold. Nothing to really sweat in terms of damage.

well i got some updates

the whole engine is apart now, and i am waiting to get some sockets to remove the oil gallery plugs (square bit) so then i'll be able to send it off for a nice bath.

i reground the valves and seats here at school. but one problem there is one bent ex. valve. and the springs are really weak. suppost to be 75-85 at so much and its at 30 or so...so they are bad :sad1: my dad is getting a lil upset cause of all the stuff he is going to have to do to use the motor. so now i need

springs
cam
lifters
pistons
rings
gasket kit
a valve or perhaps a couple havnt checked all yet
and all the lil stuff in between(cant think of more)
o water pump, oil pump blah blah

so that is really getting expensive i saw summits prices looked alright (with pistons) anyone know of a place perhaps cheaper?

Summit is great to deal with!! There prices are good and so is their service. I just ordered a huge pile of parts and shipping is free! They only charge you $10 packaging fee per order. So, the more you order at one time, the more you can save. Shipping costs can really add up fast with other companies.

Welcome to engine rebuilding...lol. I find it's easier to assume everything is trash, and go from there...lol.

i use nothern auto parts alot.
for a 74-81 360 they want $353.85 + shipping.
their master kit has:cam,lifters,timing set,
pistons,rings,all bearings,oil pump,frost plugs and gaskets.
their phone #-1-800-831-0884.
you can order a catalog free.

valve springs are a must on any rebuild, one of the
most important items.
good luck on your rebuild,
Carl

That's for sure. From the pics, the engine definitely appears to be "well used" and it's very doubtful you'll find many reusable parts. Block, crank, heads, intake, and of course oil pan and timing cover will probably be all that you can use, after the proper machining / cleaning etc. of course. Most of the other stuff is pretty well destined for the trash can as Moper said. Good luck with your project.
