I'm hopefully picking up a new to me '74 Swinger tomorrow that has ill-fitting after market wheels & tires on it. Both front and rear tires are hitting the fenders. IIRC tires are 15" x 235 R15's on ?? Center-Line style wheels. The car is a factory 318V/8 Auto with disc brakes.

What would be the factory size wheel & tire combo? Any guesses on the widest rear I could run, and what tire rim / offset I would need to run it? These tires look like they would fit (in the rear) with the correct offset rims.

Thanks, Ken

most cars had 14x5.5" wheels with equivalent to 185 tires on them. Not anything i'd suggest going back to.

With the proper backspacing fairly large wheels will fit, have you checked the "post your wheel and tire combo" thread...http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=14254

Just glancing at it quickly, it looks like up to a 275 wide rear will fit. Might not fit everything, but you can figure a 255 would be a safe bet.

Typically on a stock car you can get 4.5-5" of backspace on an 8-9" rim before you start hitting the springs or anything else. Here's a page with a '69 Valiant that fit a 17x8", 5.6" backspaced rim with a 255/45/17 on the front, same wheel will fit the rear but requires a spacer to clear the springs...http://www.moparfins.com/CLAIRDAVIS/Cobra_Wheel.htm

Thanks guys. At least I have some reference points. I think the real problem with these wheels is not enough back-space. I should know more this afternoon when I get the car home and pull the wheels off and take some measurements.
