I'm building a 727 and need to buy a aftermarket race sprag and would like to know what you guy's are using my car is 99% street use with a 514ci blow thru setup PT-106MM turbo in a 67 dart.

Let me know where to buy one or if someone on here has on that they bought and never used that you want to get rid of pm me with what you got

Thanks Mike

Rick Alison at A&A Transmission in Camby Indiana is what I use in all my transmissions They make a great bolt in Sprag kit.

The stock one. As long as you use a manual valve body, the stock sprag is sufficient. Here come the arguments.

Which one would you recommend

Coan Super Sprag seems to be the popular choice. The guys above have the most and best knowledge and experiance of these. I really dont think there is a bad one if your buying from a reputable name brand dealer.

Spacely Sprockets....

Never heard of them do you have a link to there sprag

Coan Super Sprag

Is this a direct bolt in

I buy everything from John cope, www.coperacingtrans.com

Are these direct bolt in

Cogswell's Coggs

Do you have a link to there sprag

I don't know if the stock one will hold 800-1000hp

LOL, not to ruin there fun but Spacely Sprockets and Coswell Coggs are from the cartoon the Jetsons. I think you can eliminate those two choices.

I agree the stock one is good with a manual valve body as long as it applies low band when its in 1st gear some valve bodies must not do that and still use the sprag as the holding device. Thats why the reverse valve body from A&A does have the band applied for holding and the sprag is not put under stress. If the sprag fails it could cause the rear drum to over spin and explode which totally takes out your transmission and can cause metal pieces to come in the pass. compartment. I think you need the best parts in the transmission to protect your self and your investment. I have had a transmission explode and it a hell of a thing to have happen.

A&A or ask Cope.

Thanks

My trans brake has no low band apply so a good sprag would be a good investment , hope you didn't get hurt in your explotion

Thanks Mike

Exactly. Someone gets it. As long as the proper valve body is used, a stock sprag will work with 5000 HP because it doesn't not really have anything going "through it". It just sits there in the case.

Thanks

Then you probably need a decent sprag, but even with no low band apply, it is not necessary as long as you burnout in 2nd gear and know when to shift. That is a lot of money though to depend on never making a mistake.

With that much power and no low band apply I'd go with a super sprague, either the A&A brand or Coan is fine. It's too easy to make a mistake and feet and legs are important parts of the body not to run one

my trans builder told me that w/ low band apply in a fully auto., one doesn`t need the super sprag. he set mine up that way. does this sound correct? I had a trans explosion once, don`t
want another !!

Using a VB with low band apply greatly reduces the chances of an explosion. I base my ideas on the power level being applied to the trans and the VB used. The OP's brief description of his engine sounds like it will be a real high HP application, that's why I suggested the super sprague. Personal preference is another factor on what guys use. As you see above some guys don't even consider a bolt in sprague important at any power level. I do given all that holds the sprague in place are the splines in the aluminum case and one small set screw. Any bolt in sprague is a big improvement over the stock design and the super sprague not only bolts in but has more rollers for more load capacity. If I knew 100% for sure the rear band will ALWAYS hold the rear drum without any slippage I'd be far more comfortable with using the stock design.

If I was to run a 514 with a blo-thru set up I sure would make that trans bomb proof. Ultimate 16 Roller Sprag, valve body with LBA, & a steel front drum. All available thru A&A or Cope. Sure they are high $$ items but a helluva lot less than a prosthetic leg.

A friend of mine had a sprag let go a couple of years ago. Very lucky guy to walk away from it.

Cheers. Gaz

Yea that about what mine looked like but it broke up so much that the flex plate broke and cross member was all that kept it in the car. In the end i replaced the transmission, drive shaft, flex plate and the shifter after a piece of metal went up it and jammed it. Never could get the metal out even after disassembling everything i could. All told about 5500.00 plus time in 1982 dollars. Buy the best stuff you can be safe in drag racing it not what with break but when will it break. Good luck
