What's that goo?

Can anyone tell me what product was used to hold the waterproof paper between the door and the interior panel on a 1964 Valiant. It's some sort of black sticky stuff that doesn't harden completely. It looks like it came in a strip that was about 1/4" diameter and was placed there by hand, not a caulking gun.

You can buy pre-formed caulking rope like lengths at most hardware stores such as Home Depot but sometimes they can be too thick in diameter. It's used for window caulking. I've used acoustic caulking in a tube with a caulking gun and it works very well and always stays soft like the factory stuff. and is a lot less expensive.
