Hey guys:

I recently bought my brother's 1983 318/4spd swb D150. I'm needing to get some wheels and tires on it. For the past 15 years or so it's had a set of those chrome "bullethole" wheels...probably 15x9. Two of them disappeared, and the remaining pair are shabby and rusting. The tires are 275/60-15. I really like the looks of the tires regarding the width, but I think 15" wheels and tires look rather small on one of these.

The look I'd like to go for is roughly the same width tire, but on a set of black steel "nascar" or dirt track wheels...the kind that look like regular old spoke wheels but possibly in a larger diameter. The only kicker is that this truck is so old it still has the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern like the cars use. I've come up pretty short on wheel selection. I'm not interested in crazy short sidewalls, but I'd like to hear ideas about what size wheels and tires can go under these without rubbing. The truck is not lowered.

Thanks!

Black steel wheels should be easy to find. I have Mirada wheels on mine.

Sorry, didn’t read the desired style to well but Cragar Soft 8’ might be worth a look.
I’ve had them on my cuda before.

they come in 15 and 17”.

Easiest way to shop for wheels I know, is Summits website.
Check out Aero wheels, and Basset. Wide steel Nascar style wheels are still reasonably priced, imo.
And there are hundreds ,if not thousands of wheel styles for 5 on 4 1/2!
Tire size recommendations depend ENTIRELY on wheel size and width chosen, and backspace available.
You could learn what might work, by trying the 275s on the front, and see if they clear

If you think 15s look small, you may want to look for 17 inch wheels.
There’s tons of different styles, anything that fits on a 4.5 Mopar pattern, or Mustang wheels would work. Almost all 5 lug Mazda wheels are also 4.5. There’s so many different wheels in that size it just depends on what type you’re looking for.

17" stock steelies for the LX platform litter the junkyard, or you can buy them brand new off amazon for under $100 each.

and you'll have basically your pick on tires in that diameter which is a bonus.

take note on the center register of any rim, it may not be big enough to clear the hub of the front brakes, or the rear axle. so best to measure those before you get your heart set on a set of rims that won't fit.

Another vote for Basset racing wheels strong and light

The factory Prospector Hurricane wheels look dang good.

I ran painted cop car wheels with poverty caps on mine for a while. They were plain but not completely stock looking either.

I've got factory/dealer old school turbines on my '80 step side.

Not mine--
