I did an oil change last week and was very lazy afterwards, i left the oil in a bucket outside.
Of course it rained that night, pretty badly, and now i have dirty watered down oil. Will a general service station take it? Or do i have to do something special?

I believe, but might be wrong, that Wal*Mart offers free recycling of used oil. I'd just put it in a 5qt jug and drop it off to them. Might want to call first though.

I dont know about recycling of used oil

But down here we use the used motor oil on the wood decks of the wagon/trailers. We brush it on in the fall since they get stored outside during the snow days. We do not have enough indoor storage for the wagons/trailer.

Keeps the wood from rotting. The last trailer we had, the steel rusted away in 15 years but the wood looked like new.

Many auto part store chains like Advance Auto Parts or any Quick Lube store will take it.

+1 on Advance. They are great about it. The one by me gives me a cart and lets me back to dump it. Oil, Anti freeze, no problem.

The local landfill here near Daytona has free "household waste" recycling, which includes oil, antifreeze, TV's, computers, paint, insecticide. etc. I like going there because they put anything that is usable on the shelf for the public! Of course you won't find all the brand names and variety of your local stores, but some "oil dump" trips have been more than worthwhile as I've saved money on trailer and home painting projects and found some automotive oils & chemicals, sometimes in still sealed containers.

Almost all the school bus garages and trucking firms will take used oil. Most of them burn it in special heaters designed to burn used motor oil and transmission fluid. Dan

bad idea, would have been fine 20 years ago; heck the government even oiled dirt roads with it. These days if one drop gets spilled and someone sees it they will dig "until its gone"

makes no sense to me it comes from the ground anyway

Yea they will the burners all have filters and seperators. We burn over 500 gallons of the stuff during the winter here at the DPW facility.

Let it sit for a couple of days and the oil and water will separate. I have had the rain thing happen a couple of times with the 400 gallon storage tank I put used oil in here at work. The recyclers will not take it without charging you $1 per gallon if it is contaminated. Once it separates you can stick a hose to the bottom and siphon the water out. Stop when you see oil coming out and your good.
