Just wondering what book I should purchase for tearing down and rebuilding a 340. I'm talking beginner stuff, "Motor rebuilding for Dummies" would be the sort of thing I am looking for. I need to know what to look for when inspecting, tools required and the likes. I do have friends with the knowledge but it is time I learn more so I can take it as far as I can. I have shop manuals but I need something that will take me right from the very basics through a total rebuild.
I am not totally in the dark but do not have the confidence in what I know and don't want to screw things up.
Thanks.

"How to Rebuild Small Block Mopars" by Bill Burt is a good start as well as "How to Rebuild Small Block Mopar Engines" by Don Taylor. Amazon has them both listed for less than $20.00 and you can read the reviews and see which one you think you're more comfortable with.

Here are a few..

. From MOPAR direct - small block "a" engines part number p4876826
. the book ramenth mentioned..after you read that one..then you go to "how to hot rod small block mopar engines - isbn - 978-1-55788-405-3
. MOPAR performance - isbn 0-931472-03-2
. peterson's complete book of plymouth dodge chrysler - not grewat but has a few tidbits in it
. chrysler performance upgrades isbn 1-884089-40-2

lastly, if you have a holly on it..holley rebuilding and modifying - isbn 0-931472-27-x

If you have a carter, I have a book as well..

the think the first two..the moopar book and the one ramenth mentioned are the best.

good luck and have fun...

I actually bought the missus the "Engine Repair for Dummies" book. She wanted to learn as she worked on her '65 Riviera. It's not a bad book to start with. It covers most of the basic knowledge that you need to start working on any internal combustion engine. And it does have a section on tools, as well.

I think it was money well spent.

And then, of course, you will need the Mopar books mentioned.

I purchased the HPBooks, "How to Rebuild your Small-block Mopar" By Don Taylor and Larry Hofer. Out of this book, I learned from scratch how to do the job end to end with much sucess.

I only added a few "Hot Rod" parts as the build went on. Just remember, the whole engine assembly must be balanced. Rods, pistons and then togther with the crank and the balancer and flywheel/flex plate/converter.

Thanks guys, will check out e bay and the likes. Need to get motivated again,so many peeps getting stuff done and I feel like I am stuck in the mud.

...oddly enough, go on amazon or chapters..it will be less expensive than e-pay..
