Hey.
I have a 1968 Dodge Dart GT that I´m gonna install a 1971 340 with a 727, and a new rear axle.
I have two cars for parts, one is the Dart, the other is a 1967 Plymouth Valiant. So I have two different driveshafts available and I may be able to use one of them, and if not I need to shorten one of them.
The setup on the cars was, if I remember correctly, the following:
Dodge Dart: 273 with 904 tranny, and 7.25" rear axle.
Valiant: High-comp 273 or 318, unknown tranny, 8.75" rear axle.
The Valiant is registrered at 232 hp so I dont know if it had a 4-bbl 273 or a 318.
When it´s engine broke my dad (who owned both cars) decided to transfer the 273 with transmission to the Valiant. Dont have the original engine. However, I am very interested in that rear axle...
The Valiant has been sitting outside on grass since 1992, so the body is pretty bad, but I went to look at the rear axle a couple of days ago, and it looks to be in great condition, just a little surfare rust and some paint chips.
So theres the little problem of choosing the driveshaft.. I have NOT measured the length, so I can only assume that my dad used the right driveshaft for the swap.
I have found a list of different driveshafts (attached), and I think the following combinations were used:
Barracuda Valiant: 2852206 1967-69 Ø2.75" Length: 48.60" Trans: 904 Rear: 8-3/4" Engine: 273 318
Dodge Dart: 2853237 1967-76 Ø3.00" Length: 54.36" Trans: 904 Rear: 7-1/4" Engine: 170 225 273 318
and I think I need the following:
2852228 1967-69 Ø3.25" Length: 47.81" Trans: 727 Rear: 8-3/4" Engine: 340 383
So, if the one on the Valiant is the correct one per the document, its 0.79" longer, and is Ø2.75" instead of 3.25". Can I use this on my Dart, or do I need to get one thats is the correct length, and/or thicker?
Or, can I shorten the 3" one I currently have on the Dart?
