Building my 318 and am at the decision point for a fuel pump.

Cam is CompCam XE268..............477/.480 224/230
Holley 650DP

Will a stock 318/340/360 mechanical pump work fine?

I'm looking in Summit right now and looking at the Mopar Performance Pump #4007040AB. 80gph 8.7psi. I wouldn't need a regulator for this one would I?

Thanks!! Help is appreciated.

Carter mechanical pumps have always been my go to pump, my son and his engine builder for his 460 said = yes your dads right, go with the Carter

RockAuto carries Carter pumps also. Might be worth a look pricewise.

Run your stock one till it quits you will be fine. Than spend money on carter.

Only with a regulator!
Otherwise a cutoff pressure of 7 psi or less is the way to go.

There's a page of pump info including flow and cutoff on my website. In short, for non-rgulator application, the one Carter used to call "Super Street" M6902 is a better choice than the "Competition" M6270 when used without regulator.

Stock pump should be adequate even with stock 5/16 fuel line IF the line and filters are in good shape. When I first rebuilt my 'cuda with a 340 (around 1990) it would run out of fuel at the end of the 1/4 mile. Confirmed with fuel pressure gage mounted on the cowl.

With too much cutoff pressure, it would also occasionally flood the carb at inopportune moments. Even though it had been an Arizona car, the root of the problem was the fuel line around the top of the wheelwell. Changed the line to 3/8 stainless and using a lower pressure and no problems since.

My friend Rob's '68 'cuda runs quicker than mine (in the 12s) and is still using the original 5/16 fuel lines with no problems. From that I conclude that the stock lines can be adequate for well over 300 engine hp if everything is in good shape. Top Hp will dictate the max amount of fuel the pump needs to flow. Line size will make its job easier or harder. Of course at some flow rate, the 5/16 line will simply be inadequate with mechanical diaphram pump. All the details and calcs on the webpage linked above.

I wouldn't run a mechanical anymore for many reasons.

I wouldn't run anything smaller than 3/8" line either.

Check out aeromotive if you want to drop the coin, other wise my jegs no name pump worked fine for years and fed 500hp.

Your stock pump and 5/16 line are enough. If you want to upgrade, then do a 3/8 line from tank/fuel sender all the way up to the carb. If your car has a return line, use it In conjunction with the regulator and the high flow pump.

That set up will take you to some high hp levels In The street.
You can reference the big block fuel line sizes vs. there HP ratings and see the 5/16 line goes far.

That is the same fuel pump I use with the same cam you have with a stock TQ carb. It works fine. The Carter M6866.

The Carter M6866 that Oldmanrick linked to is a stock style pump and has a max pressure spec from 5-6.5 psi.

The MP p4007040 that the OP first looked at is a Carter M6270 with a cutoff spec of 7.5 psi. Ryan Brown tested one and confirmed and pressure goes to 7.5 psi. Graph and table of small block mechanical fuel pumps on my website here
