So the 67 cuda I scored came with a 2brl 273, complete. Popped the valve covers yesterday and found an adjustable valve train and I'm betting there's a forged crank in the bottom too. Here's the query. Do I rebuild the 273 up right or do I do the 69 318 in the garage?

If I go 'teen: Can I use the forged crank from the 273? Heard different things regarding this (Allpar) and need a sure answer.

The heads from the 273 are the small chamber (57cc) casting. Make a good swap on the 'teen to help bump compression?

Lastly, to go with the adjustable valvetrain or is this something you always have to F with? Is the benefit of it that great over the stock type shaft rockers or is it just more headache?

Many thanks in advance :)

You can use the 273 forged crank in a 318, I have a '65 poly 318 forged crank in my 340. The '67 small chamber heads will raise your compression but after the expense adding hard seats for unleaded fuel it might be better to use the '80's #302 318 heads. They are the small chamber and swirl port type head. The adjustable valve train is not needed for a hydraulic cam unless the motor you are ging to use has had a bunch of milling done then you might want the adjustable stuff to get your lifter pre-load right. But more times than not the non-adjustable valve train is fine with a hydraulic cam.

The '69 has the forged crank, plus smaller open chamber heads...I like the 302 idea myself..great little heads.

Strangely enough the 69 teen has a cast crank. At least it's a 69 casting date but checked the old intake and it's a 70 intake according to the #'s. Guess that would make the engine a 70 but would still think it would have the forged crank.

My '69 273 has a cast crank. I believe they cast cranked the 273's in '68 & '69 so I am not surprised they also appear in 318's. I wouldn't worry about the whole cast crank thing. There is a ton of them out there and have lived just fine.
If your casting date is after 7th month they are usually ended up in the next year auto.
