Which is the better side cover to use for drag racing, the ball detent type or the lever type, and why is it better?

I'm very interested in this same question. What side cover is better for drags and what's better for street?

The double lever interlock side cover assembly was introduced in late 1970 on the AAR 'Cuda and T/A Challenger and was used on all transmissions from 1971-74. The older ball and detent unit was used on all 4-speeds prior to the aforementioned change. The newer double-lever interlock unit is interchangeable with the older units and vice versa if all pieces of the side cover assembly and shifting mechanisms are transferred. This situation is useful since drag racers generally prefer the earlier version and street drivers the newer style.

I have always read to use the ball and detent cover. I can't remember if it was because the newer one would lock up or cause problems with shifting at high RPMs. They also recommended to use the steel shifting forks. To use these with the older covers you had to remove the end that sticks out. This would allow them to slip all the way in the levers of the older covers.

YesI've heard that too. They say if the rooster combs in the old style have the edges massaged down it is very smooth shifting. Its the street car new style part that I've havent heard yet

I just happened to find the article. I have no idea why which one is better.

hi, I looked in old mopar race manual , concerning 4 speed trans. mopar wanted the ball/detent used for racing , was for slick shifted trans. the ball/detent is more positive does not hang up in two gears at once. the lever style is same used by general motors. I remember many GM guys missing gears with those levers . the ball /detent can be modified to increase the travel of the slider for better engagment of gears. I ran the ball /detent style always. just food for thought!!

Ball and detent is the way to go, the lever style is prone to hang up, and jam in fast shifting situation. Also the ball and detent is much easier to align if you ever have to service the gearbox. It is very easy to switch to this style from lever style, all parts are available, give Brewers Performance a call , there great to work with.
