Thinking about a Tilt Column for our 69 Fastback.
Which Tilt Column works well? Which don't?
Converting from Column Shift Automatict o Floor Shift.
It was a MS car but not decided on Steering setup yet. Manual or Power.
Leaning towards PS with a Borgeson Box.
Might still just look for a Floor shift factory column.

Thanks,
Randy

The only one out there is Flaming River for about $1200

Use an IDIDIT shorty column, install a bearing on the old steering column plate that attaches to the firewall, add a DD shaft. Easy peasy and not a ridiculous $1200.

Clenteg, do you have pictures of this?

I used the summit piece, factory floor plate, and an upper column clamp,DD's to the rack

No problem. I cut off the mounting points from my old column. You could fab your own but the old column was junk to me so I cut it off and used it.

Ooooo, nice!
A bit above my tool set and edges me skill set.... at least for a good lookin job.

How long did it take you to figure and perform?

The research took more time than the actual fabrication. Luckily I found a thread where orangewagon did a very similar thing and I copied and adapted it to my application. Really it was a matter of cutting out the mounting piece from the original column, mock where the column needs to go, mark the mount for location, and weld it. It was actually very straight forward and easy. If you fabricated the mount from scratch, that would take longer and a bit more difficult. That's why I sacrificed the old column. The only other fabrication part was welding in a new flat piece of sheet metal to the firewall support and cutting a hole for the bearing. That part was pretty simple as well. I couldn't really tell you how long it all took but I didn't have a whole lot of time in it compared to other fabrication I've had to do on the car. I bet I spent at least 5 times the amount of hours making that dash insert.

I have the Flaming river tilt column and a power rack and pinion on my RMS front suspension. I just started the engine and haven't driven it yet, The only real problem I had was with the column mount that came with the column, I wound up having to flip the mount.

No rack, just looking for tilt column options since I have to replace the column shift steering column anyway.
Could just go with a factory floor shift column and no tilt...

Thanks for all the replies!

I have some time before I have to decide but always looking for a good deal.

I really like Clint's column.
You don't happen to have a complete parts list do you Clint?
What steering box are you running?

I had a 80's Camero tilt wheel fabed up in my 66 Dart. It all worked, turn signals, even used the column key. Went a different direction after all the work.
Hard part was finding a turn signal lever with no cruise control switches, but they are out there.

The column I used is IDT-1120160010 (which is mild steel and needs to be painted) and the bearing is AFCO AFC-30321. You'll need a 3/4" x 3/4" DD steering joint and also another that is 3/4" DD to whatever spline your steering box will be. Get a 3/4" DD shaft a little longer than what you need and trim it to length. I had a flaming river manual box before but now have an HDK setup with rack and pinion.

@clinteg
What steering wheel is that bud? Also, will that bearing you bolted on to the floor piece suit a flaming river column?

Thanks in advance

It's a grant wheel with a billet horn button. I couldn't tell you the model of it. The bearing is suited for the 3/4" DD shaft. So it just depends on what FR column you're using and what you're adapting to it.

Do you have any pictures of this installed? More importantly the actual column mount under the dash. ;)
Thank you.

I did a flaming river using the original floor plate and mounting bracket. Pull the original column apart and slide the flaming river column into the housing.
It fits in perfectly just trim the OEM housing at the fire wall. I have a 67 fastback that was column shift.
