Looking for a Referal for a “good” powder coated of 4 @ 15” aluminum fwd rims here in Connecticut. If I were closer to cudachick I’d be pm her. Anyone have their rims done and can recommend someone in New England? I’m not son much worried about trucking there cost. I’m more worried about return trucking and how they are likely to be scratched with knuckle headed transport companies.
Thanks!
Joe

Personally I would not powder coat wheels.

My personal experience....
Had 4 wheels for a dodge grand caravan powder coated. ( Bought used wheels, looked better in photos then in person) had them sandblasted and powder coated silver by a local company.

  1. The powder coat was applied to the inside of the center bore, making it impossible to get them on the hubs.
  2. Within one year they had chips on them where the tire store clamped the cone on the wheel to balance the tires
  3. The plastic coat has started to do what could be best described as shrink around the center.
Nos you could say that it wasapoor application which it might be but...

My expectation was that powder coat was tougher than paint and that has not proved to bd that case.

If it was paint it would have been relitivally easy to touch up the chips etc.

My personal decision when restoring wheels on my '68 was to primer/gloss black them knowing that they will get scratched over time and touch-up would be easier. Scratches come from mounting and hub cap/wheel covers. Your choice.

@CudaChick1968 will NOT powder coat used aluminum wheels. Because of the tire dressings people use, it takes an expensive dangerous process to get them clean enough to powder coat, and she wont do it.
She will do new, never mounted wheels.
I would suggest paint. Its touchup able.
Edit : i dont want to put words in her mouth. She can explain much better than me.

Thanks all!

yea after more research I decided this is the son’s car and if he wants the factory 85 Daytona turbo Z wheels chrome- he can polish them. Chipping is the main reason plus issues with armor all spray on coating seems to have a softening and color change effect.
Thanks for the info. As a Dad and want to jump in and fix the whole damn car.... I need to let him do the work and help
Where I can. This is “his” project - not mine.
Ahhh! Only to be 17 again but know what I know now:)
