I lost my Grand Mother this morning at 2 am. We called her Mamaw Ruth.
Mamaw was 94 years old. Mamaw Ruth passed in her sleep of natural causes.
Mamaw was born in January of 1915 in a 2 room log cabin in Braxton County, West Virginia. She only went to the 3rd grade, which was a lot of "schooling" for a girl way back then. She married my Papaw at the age of 14 (which was common back then), in 1929. Mamaw and Papaw had 10 children by 1947. Papaw passed in 1984 of cancer.

There were 6 Generations alive with Mamaw.
Her 10 childern,
25 Grand children ,
77 great- grand children ,
32 great-great-grand children ,
and

11 great-great-great-grand children.

I have to cook for all of them in 4 days. Now, I am not freaking out, I consider it a blessing. Someone else is buying the food. I will not be using my own kitchen. and I will have help. But,where I was a restaurant manager for Shoney's, I have been elected by my Aunts, my dad's 6 sisters, to be in charge of the food. This was not an unexpected passing. This is going to be a good old fashioned Irish Wake, full of good memories and a celebration of Mamaw Ruth's life. I do ask for prayers for my father and his 9 brothers and sisters for the loss of their mom.

Thank you.

~MARY

Sounds as if Mamaw Ruth had a full and blessed life with that many relatives joining her Irish Wake. Aloha being sent and my condolences to your family for your loss.

Aloha Mike

My condolences Mary, and to all of the family that filled her life for many years

Im very sorry to hear this. The loss of a grand parent can be very hard…. Even more so this time of year.

Surround yourself with family and friends this holiday season and remember the good times…..

Memories can keep a loved one alive in your heart and even bring a smile to your face.

The reason for the Irish wake:
Mamaw's Grand mother Ursla Simmons was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1854, and came to America in 1857 when she was 3.

This was one of Mamaw'a favorite songs. Mamaw had the classic Irish red hair and blue eyes. I know there will be many of us singing this song this weekend. I love you Mamaw. I know your eyes are smiling, now.

She was my very last living grand parent. and when she got mad she spoke in the Irish brogue. Aye she did that she did, and so do I

So sorry for your loss. Sounds like she was a wonderful lady with a BIG loving family. What more could you or her ask for?

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the passing of a great lady. She has left a legacy few people can match.

And YOU have been given the honor of cooking for her wake. I'm sure you will do her proud. It helps to write a time-line of when things need to happen in order to be ready. Have a list of course and delegate.

Our thoughts and best wishes to you and your family, Mary. You must have many wonderful memories. Those are to be treasured.

So very sorry to hear of your Grandma's passing Mary. Sounds like a good old fashion Irish celebration is being planned, I can only imagine the size of the food table for this memorial.

Terry

Sorry for your loss Mary i recently lost my grandmother also, it was a week ago today. She was 99, always thought she would make it to her 100th birthday!

She just got tired of waiting to see your grandfather. be happy for her. sadness is just our own selfishness not wanting to let go.I bet she would be glad to know she has everyone getting together.

The last thing she told My Dad's twin sister, Dawn was, "Dawnie, I'm ready to go home to your Dad. He's a waiting on me now near 26 years .I'd best be going, you take Kitty (her stuffed cat that sat on the bed beside her) and you take her home and watch o'er her. Me and your Dad will be a watchin' you real soon. He was with me last night helping me pack my bags."

Yeah, gives me goose bumps too.
