I'm trying to do a cost analysis of purchasing a used 8 3/4 sure grip rear with decent gearing versus installing a set of gears in my 7 1/4 rear (please refer to subject title). Does any company still manufacture 7.25 ring and pinions in, say, the 3:55 range, if at all? If so, which company? Don't have a very beefed up V-8, but just want to know my options. Thanks.

There is zero chance I would suggest you build a 7 1/4. You WILL break it. The other alternative, other than say, Ford, Jeep, "other" is an 8 1/4, which are fairly plentiful.

Building a 7 1/4 = waste of time. Anything else is better.

The explorer 8.8 is also a popular upgrade. Lots of threads on those.
