The Kelsey-Hayes Disk Brake Swap Thread

MBM Standard Small Bolt Front Pattern Rotor

Guys.
Check this out.
Evidenatally there now is both a hub and rotor assembly for the Kelsey Hayes, 4 inch, small bolt pattern, disc brakes.
You don't have to find unobtanium, dinosaur eggs, hens teeth, obsolete, bare hubs anymore.
Thought I'd pass this on to the readership, as someone turned me on to this part.

Feel free to ask for yourselves, but when I inquired about these rotors earlier this year, I was told by MBM that they are service replacements for an MBM conversion kit. I know it looks as if in the fitment menus that they fit as one piece K-H replacements, and you could assume they would, but I was told they don't.

The kit looks a lot like the standard reproduction slider-style spindle and bracket kit, and like Dr. Diff, uses sleeves to make the small upper ball joint fit. MBM says they use the '73-up repro spindle on all their conversion kits, and we know the early K-H hub and rotor assembly won't interchange with the '73-up rotor. 2627 SPINDLE SET - Mopar Spindle & Caliper Bracket Set

The kit is available with either 4" or 4.5" lug pattern rotors. A Body Disc Brake Conversion Kits

These rotors might work with the '73-up factory setup, allowing you to run SBP wheels on the later brakes. I can't imagine why, but I suppose somebody might have a reason why they would want to.

Like I said, feel free to confirm, but please do before sending your money and getting into a situation where you need to make a return.

Well, I'm glad that you posted that heads up, information.
Wasn't aware of that, and wasn't told about that from the member that turned me onto that rotor and hub.
That being true then, if people needing 1965-72 Kelsey Hays disc brake hubs, your then still going to be S*@T out of luck in finding them, sorry to say.

No problem, I hope I was helpful.

There's also this one that's wrong. It shows that it would be a LBP rotor that fits the K-H four piston brakes for only $40. MBM Front Plain Large Bolt Pattern Rotor

I just called Mancini Racing to give them a heads up. They will probably have their website updated later today. I told them they didn't have to take my word for it, but to check the inner bearing. For these rotors to fit the '72-down spindles, they would take a Timkin #6, not the larger #17 used on the '73-up spindles.

I was unaware of this situation when I ordered these rotors, nor was I told about only fitting the MBM kit either. I see Mancini has since updated their parts description on these rotors. Lesson learned. It cost me almost as much to ship these rotors, as it was to purchase them, so I'm not sending them back. Paper weights for the time being I guess.

Hey guys,
So, if I have the 10 inch front drum setup on my 67 cuda, then I would need different spindles to go with the Kelsey hayes setup, right?
I have:
Both calipers
Both rotors with hubs attached
Both backing plates
Mater cylinder and power booster
Proportioning valve
Bearings and caps.

Are the spindles available?

Do I need anything else?
Thx!

You would need the Kesey Hayes front spindles.

Might be able to find some used spindles on here. I didn’t see where you asked if they’re available on your first question. Dustin

ChuckDock,
The Kelsey-Hayes spindles you need are only available used. They are often found in this section: Mopar Brakes, Steering, Suspension, Tires & Wheels For Sale
The brake setups available through Dr. Diff are different, and based on later style systems. Good stuff, to be sure, but different. If you're in a hurry, this may be the way to go.
Also, if you go with the Kelsey-Hayes system, you'll be limited to the 4" Small Bolt Pattern rotors as the only ones that are readily available. FABO members have had some success in machining Mustang rotors to use with the K-H brakes, and get the 4.5" bolt pattern: Using mustang rotors for 4.5" bc
If you go the K-H route, you'll also need caliper to spindle bolts.

Thanks! I appreciate the info. Bummer on the spindles. I did do a search and didnt come up with anything.
I'm going to probably just sell these parts. I do want the 4.5 bolt pattern so I can get larger wheels.
With Mopar tax in mind, lol, what do you think all the stuff I have is worth?

The hubs have some value, because they haven't been made in decades. If the rotors are decent, that adds a bit to their value. While new Chinese rotors are available, they're not the quality of those from back in the day. However, if your rotors are no good, they actually detract from the value of the hubs, because someone has to switch them out, and pay to have them shipped, only to junk them.
If by backing plates you mean splash shields, they are worth something, too, if they are nice, or could be made nice. If you mean supports for front drum brakes, I'd think they have minimal value.
Rebuilt calipers are readily available at $100, so depending on condition, from rebuildable core to really nice, you could price yours accordingly.
Your master cylinder, booster and proportioning valve can all be used on other disc systems.
I don't have prices to suggest for you. Looking through the old for sale thread should give you plenty of guidance.

Okay new guy here trying to do the research I just boought a '64 Valiant convertible, pulling the front wheels I was pleasently surprised to find these 4 piston calipers with 11" rotors. They look just like what the swap shows.
I did see the Rock Auto parts list as well.
My question is are these OEM parts from a later model Chrysler product? If so, what years/models?
While my car has a slant 6 it also has a 4 speed trans with 6-14-77 stamped on it. I also found a solenoid trunk release with 1977 on it. Just trying to sort it all out.
TIA for any help.

65-72 Valiants Darts barracuda Duster

65-72 A body cars, used the Kelsey Hayes 4 piston, disc brake caliper, set up.
OK, are the wheel studs different? Maybe metric?
The lugs nuts from the Left rear (rt hand thread) will not thread on the front, the nut from the front threads loosely on the rear.

DISC brake studs are different from Drum brake ones, if that's the question you're asking.
Lefties were used up till 1970, unless changed out to right, during the past lifetime of the car

No such thing as METRIC on the old Mopars, such as these.

Thanks, I'm aware of the L - R threads, both fronts are R the rear is L-R. I just found it odd the lug nuts don't match.
I'll probably upgrade the rears as on axle shaft is leaking as well as the pinion.

It sounds like you may have 1/2 studs on the front and 7/16 on the rear.

Great original sticky, thanks. Just of note....two of the four bolts that are removed from a 10" drum backing plate are the same length and thread as the "caliper to spindle" bolts required for the KH spindles. So keep those two bolts you may need one or two like I did.
