1969 Valiant Slicing

As I trim the sections to fit, a few issues have come up. I have solutions for every one except 3.

1. The qt panel flattened out towards the back so there is a gap
2. Left over of rear reflector needs deleting.
3. Body line don't match up.
4. Rear part of qt panel curves inward more.
5. Rear part of qt panel is shorter.
6. Oops I skipped a number
7. Body line does not exist on right qt panel.
8. Bad body work on a past fender bender.

Got the welding on the doors and rear qt panels finished. Did about 90% of the Bondo work to make the welds look pretty. Still needs some welding on the trunk floor and then I will tackle the trunk lid.

The proportions look much better in the shot with it together and in primer. Reminds me of altered wheelbase gassers. They were fun to watch. The guys that drove them had big huevos and no fear! All you need is some tubs and a straight axle.
 
Cut 10" out of the deck lid. Installed the front part on the hinges and scriped on the fenders where it ended when closed. Used a laser level to line up the marks and mark the rear part of the deck lid for the final cut. Tack welded the two pieces and add brases so I could take the deck lid off. Welded up the inner support structure and added some extra support. Didn't make it look pretty, because it is not a show car. Flipped it over and finished welding the top skin.

coulda made part of it flip toward the back of the car and put in a rumble seat.
looks good your way also.
 
This body only had rust through in three spots. The driver side trunk corner is the worst of it. I learned how to fix this by watching Fitzee Fabrications https://www.youtube.com/@fitzeesfabrications. His technique is to make a pattern, break it down into eazy to make subsections, weld the subsections together, and weld in the patch. Of course Fitzee does it a lot better then I do. I just need to add a little bondo to make it look factory.

I’ve heard of fitzee before but never watched any of his stuff before tonight. I just watched the “complex patches” video you mentioned and that’s absolutely genius! Definitely gonna have to check out more of his stuff.

Attached are some photos of a rear quarter corner I had to make from flat sheet. I didn’t realize there was old crash damage on it until I began excavating the bondo under the paint. Nylon ”pear-shaped” hammers and a sandbag were what I used to form it. Turned out pretty well for my first effort.

You did a good job. My front fender has a simlar problem. It has a half inch of bondo and some rust. I will be posting its repair soon.

If I had been a little braver I would have tried what you did. I had rust in the same area, but also exfoliating rust at the leaded joints a little further down. Also rust in the lower window surround. So I replaced the whole trunk surround and lower window frame, then the package tray…
 
Still working on rust repairs. The driver side fender had over a 1/2 inch of bondo on the front nose along with some rust. It took a lot of dolly work and using the shrinking disk to get it back close to factory. I forgot to take a picture when it was crumpled. Now it just needs a skim coat of bondo. Wray Schelin's ProShaper Workshop YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@proshaper is where I learned that a crumpled fender could be saved.

Nice work, I don't care what you say that's frickin cute. Shortened cars used to be pretty popular in the 60s, especially 4 door station wagons.

I talked to the owner/builder at Tulsa in 2007, he had put it together in the 60s from a 57 4 door ......had to do the door grafting thing too.

It runs a 392 Hemi, A833 and 4.11s said "it can be a handful" LOL
