I picked up what I believe is a-body 18 spline used in hemi Dart/Barracuda.

The input shaft was cut, probably use behind auto motor.
The linkage look kind of different. Is it how super stock car set up, or they was modified for different application?

Chevy racers would cut the input shaft like that.
They can be fixed. I know Jamie Passon will do the repair.
That trans may have seen some time in a camero or nova.
First thing I would check for is if it has been modified to slick shift.
Common practice back in the day.

I would also get those GM levers off of it. They make for a longer shifter throw.

Thanks, I was curious but the VIN its too high to be from one of the 1968 Super Stock A-bodies.

I'll guess that someone did a tailshaft/guts swap on the stock case

I dont know about that. Whats the latest SS/AH VIN you have in your record?

I found this trans is very interesting, it produced in very last day for 1968 model, but still 1 week ahead of the schedule for Hemi Dart/Barracuda build date.

The trans build date 2481 is May/13/1968, meanwhile, the Hemi Darts were scheduled to be build on between February/18/1968 and May/21/1968; the Hemi Barracudas were scheduled to be built on February/18/1968 and May/19/1968.

Its hard to think someone swap to Mopar A-body tail-shaft to use in Chevy or GM car, why swap when you going to modify to fit anyway? Swapping the tail-shaft must include swapping the main-shaft, it take more work than modify the transmission mount and cross-member, who does that?

Yet, check the assembly plant and the tail-shaft casting

The swaps happened a lot. It's what you did if you wanted a 18 spline A body box and not buying an over the counter piece.

Since they built Chargers in that plant, it's more likely that it came from an R/T car.

I will send the vin to the guy who has all the vins of the SS cars

A guy was selling a 68 Hemi A-body four speed trans set up at the Larry Roesch swap meet two weeks ago.... Asking $$$$ for it....

The VIN on this case is over 27,700 higher than the highest 1968 SS car I am aware of.

Barry, in my records I have seen two BO29 that have a VIN difference of 91500.

B029M8B390659 offered by Russo and Steele in 2010 auction, and
B029M8B299126 raced by Arlen Vanke.

Definitely NOT a super stock race hemi trans, as it is still fully syhncronized, the race transmissions were "slick shifted" and didn't have the brass syhncro rings in there. Looks like a B body hemi trans with the a body tailshaft and output shaft swapped. Still a KILLER piece!

I strongly disagree with the assumption that this trans was swapped.

If it were aluminum , or, if have later tail-shaft, most likely it swapped. However, this trans have cast iron tail-shaft and the casting # 98126 matching the trans build date. I pretty sure this trans is Mopar factory assembly.

Hi, While on the discussion, I have a 18 spline A body trans as well. It was in a A body race car for years. It was opened up and in excellent condition and not converted to slick shift.
Here are a few pictures and the Vin#

Maybe if Davescuda comes back and tells you the SS vin guy has that on file, then yes. Until then, it's a converted B body trans and that's not the answer you want to hear.

I did no less than 10 of these B to A, 18 spline conversions back in the 80's.

Those shift rods won't fit any A body car I've ever worked on without some serious mods. Definitely not SS shift parts

Marksmopar1 transmission is a PERFECT example. No A body cars from Lynch Road in 1968 from what i recall.

Replicarracer is 100% correct on this as well.

Everything about this trans points to a modified part rather than a factory built transmission.
Still a great part to have. Chevy guy built this for his street strip camaro is what it appears it will fit as is. With a little work it could be used in a A-body.
The 68 SS transmissions were special inside as well as unique with the parts bolted onto them.
Finding the correct pieces today would be very hard and not much short of a miracle. It would be nearly impossible to create an exact SS clone 833.
The Hurst shifter that was used has been long discontinued and not a factory part.
The shifter mounting bracket was not the same as was used on factory A-body 4-speeds.
Gears were specifically modified for racing called red stripes.
Slick shifted transmissions wear fast. They weren't built to last like what was installed in a production car. They were built to be up shifted only, hard and fast, run for a 1/4 mile at a time and maintenced very often. Easily done back when the parts were still available from Chrysler. Not true today. I would not be surprised if all the remaining 68 4-speed SS cars don't even have an as delivered slick shift transmission installed. If there is one still around
as delivered I would really like to see it.

Factory built hemi superstock cars were not built with a synchronized transmissions IIRC. Its pretty dang simple to swap the output shaft and extension housing to the a body pieces, and its EXACTLY how people put together a 18 spline box back in the day. Like I said before, its still a killer transmission worth some $$$$

The A is the assembly plant code for Lynch Road, they only made B-bodies there for '68.
