OK here is what I have , 72 duster "H" code previous owner put a 440 in it. Now I built the 440 and its now got aluminum heads, bigger cam ,bored 40 over with 11 to 1 compression. Is the factory 5/16 line going to be enough to teen the roughly 550hp big block? What's everybody's opinion? Any help would be appriciated .

It will probably be ok, 3/8" would be better if in fact you will be at that HP level and turning hi rpm's

Stock line is fine, my friend runs a built 440 with a dual quad tunnel ram and his stock fuel line works fine. If you do decide to change the line then you will need to modify your fuel sending unit or buy a new one.

Thanks for the help, I I know it would be interesing to modify the sending unit. I guess I will see what happens and I can always change if I have issues.

If its apart now id go with a 3/8 sending unit and line. Could be iffy at 5/16 take care of it now wont cost much.

I agree. It's not like a 3/8 line upgrade is gonna put you in the poorhouse. Plus the benefits far outweigh the expense and trouble.

I had a 383 RR when i put the 440 in it would stave for fuel on the highway after a few miles. Switch to 3/8 and no more problems. All 440 and HEMIs came with 3/8 for a reason. Cheap switch besides a new sender.

Yea .. and u can just pull it in and put it on the lift won't rake very long. I didnt know that all 440 were fed by 3/8 ... Kinda like a lot of the other stuff if I have 5000 in the engine what's 100 more lol

My signet has two fuel lines and a cutoff for each, 1 is 3/8" and the other is 1/2 inch

my 68 form. S came stock w/ 3/8" line. it now has -08 , which is really 7/16" I.D. to the regulator up front, then 3/8" ( which is really 1/4" I.D.)to each end of the carb. ( will be a 950 quickfuel). some of my dragracer friends run bigger than that! ------------I`d SAY 3/8 MINUMIM--------bob:coffee2:

I would not attempt to feed a 500 plus HP engine with a 5/16 fuel line. IMO, a fuel system needs to be able to supply more fuel than the engine can use at full throttle high RPM. If you're near the edge with it, I.E. almost adequet but just a little to weak, you may not realize that your not supplying enough fuel. A fuel system that is too small will perform fine if the only thing you're doing is cruising and occationally stabbing the throttle for short bursts, say 1 to 3 seconds or so, but if you really ring it out as in going to the drag strip and racing, or longer duration top speed runs you can be running the fuel bowls on the carb low and the engine will go lean without it being totally obvious. FYI, Clay smith Engineering sells a nice high volume mechanical pump that can handle an engine like yours. It produces 16 PSI of pressure so you have to run a regulater and a return line. You could use the 5/16 line as the return but you have to plumb it so that it returns somewhere near the top of the tank. The Clay Smith pump is $155, you don't need to go through the hasstle of the elecric pump and wiring install and best of all, no electric pump whine noise.

Yes I have an electric fuel pump, its going to be mostly a track car because previous owner put a nice cage and modifyed gauges ( water remp, oil pressure , fuel level , and volts) that's it. But could be driven in street just not real comfortable. I think you guys are right would rather have too much then not enough.

5/16 will suffice. BUT, If you go ahead and go 3/8, you'll never have to worry if you upgrade further.

Not that it matters but your 68 Formula S came stock with 5/16", just like they all did.

I am looking at 500-550 Hp 426 wedge, i am running cater electric pump with 3/8 feed out of a factory style pickup in the tank. will add the 5/16 line as a return line to help keep the pump cool.

IMO a return line is important as well. My 340 (330HP rear wheels) runs fine on the 5/16" feed line, but craps out at top end in warm weather at Brandimere (5800'). Once the sun sets, it runs great to 6500 RPM. I am running a factory return line that was part of the vapor recovery system on some 70's A-Bodies. The line runs parallel to the existing feed line. I am setting up a filter with a vapor separator and purchased the 3/8" pickup for the tank end. A reducer from Goodyear adapts the 3/8" tank pickup to the 5/16" line, so if I ever want to go to 3/8" fuel line I already have the pickup. A cool can and carb insulation gaskets also help with todays alcohol laden gas. Remember that alcohol increases RVP and causes vapor lock a lot easier than non alcohol gas.
Good Luck,
Bob
