318 with 360 heads and compcam build help

-
I don’t know what you plan to use for springs but the comp 901-16 or hughes engines springs HUG 1110P will fit your 360 heads with no machining required.
I don’t know the size of the current spring I have but I could try to figure it out and get back to you.

Let’s just all understand where im at. I’m a 21 year old guy with 5 classic cars and 0 performance experience. I’ve got 2 darts a 69 impala 83 sierra and a 70 beetle. I can put a motor together but I have no clue about matching parts to work together.

Springs I have say 995-16 is that good or bad?
You would need to have your 360 heads machined to use that spring. Machine work will cost you more than a new set of springs. You could probably sell what you have here.

Okay so say I sell the comp cam kit and the 360 heads and the 360 block and another 273 motor and a few transmissions I’ve got in my garage now I’ve got some money. And my parts list looks a little different now it’s a 318 with 318 heads a chinesium 4 barrel intake a couple Holley 4 barrels and a 4 barrel edelbrock carb I want some more performance what do you suggest I do to raise the performance?

Well how would I figure that out?
Cam manufacturers recommend a seat pressure (valve closed) and a spring rate as the valve opens for their cam profiles. This is measured in pounds. There are other variables as well.

On the cam card, it should call out the spring pressure specs for that cam. They are seat pressure (closed), over the nose / lobe pressure (open). And then you want to know spring heights, coil bind.
Kick says it’s not worth machining which makes sense. The specs on those springs is going to be far from what I need with the setup I need. I’m looking for logic here and I’m fine being told I’m wrong. I’m looking for guidance on what to do with my quantity of parts. Basically I’ve got a pile of mopar motor parts and no clue what to do with it.

Use your 360 heads and purchase the spring kit I mentioned.

yeah I think I’ll sell the kit as a whole and buy something more reasonable.

What can and do I need an entire rotating assembly or just heads? Also does 318 rocker assembly’s work
Either one of the cams I mentioned earlier would be good. The xe262h is a little more performance oriented. Comp may sell that as a kit with the springs. Your 318 shafts and rockers will work. I would just get new pistons and then have the shop freshen up your block, crank, rods and heads.

Okay I will look try to contact a shop in the Virginia area and see what they want me to do I’ll see if the cam is available.

How does one know what pistons will raise compression but not destroy itself on the valves?

You know anything about putting a 340 cam in a 318 I see some forums on that also?

Cams I recommended are similar to the 340 camshaft. You need to find a piston with at least a 1.840” compression height. I’m sure some 318 experts will chime in and recommend something l.

Yeah I’ll buy the kit today it’s only 400 bucks and we can wait for a 318 guy to tell me what pistons to use I’ve seen some but I’m not completely sure.

You need to cool it on buying stuff until you understand what you are doing.

Yes. It's been done till the cows come home, but there are WAY better choices out there for what you have than the 340 cam.
