Hey guys i am having traction issues. Unless i press the gas like an egg it smokes the tires . My motor is 408 stroker 284 Clay smith cam .51 lift 1.6 rockers. Transmission is 904 with An A&A manuel reverse valve body dynamic 9.5 convertor 3500 stall.. Tires are BFG on 17x7 wheels. Do you think Caltracs will help and how will they effect the ride quality..

Any Suggestion would be helpful

Crank up the torsion bars. That'll help the weight transfer. I'd also try a battery relocation to the trunk.

Drag Radial Tires!

I had traction problems too, I installed some Mickey Thompson street ET tires and it helps. The problem you have with tires is you want that look with your custom rims, probably not many options for tires in the size you need. With your car I wouldn't want to change the ride height much, looks sweet. Battery in the trunk would help some.

caltracs with the mono leaf spring makes a big difference that with the ET street mickey Thompson and you will be hooking up

I would try the drag radials first, your pushing some good HP!If your still breaking loose?I,d install the Caltracs.I have 275/50/15,s M/T drag radials with slide-a-link from Competition Engineering and I,m hooking very well!2 cents.

How does the Caltracs effect the ride quality and handling of the car. I have never had them nor rode in a car with them...I heard they work well in the traction department.

The BFG`s look good but suck for traction. Like the guys said a set of MT ET radials will help a lot. Other things help like clamping together the front section or your leaf springs, moving your battery to the trunk, replace your V8 torsion bars with /6 bars, long shocks in the rear, 40,000+ miles front shocks, and a full tank of gas.

They will stiffen your ride up a little, but you,d better hold on cause you will feel the real HP that your car has!Are you gonna get some new rubber? My car hooked better with the slide-a-link and B.F,s but still having tire spin.No tire spin with the drag radials, and that,s with a 4 gear!

Basic weight transfer (redistribute weight to the rear, and suspension mods like shocks and torsion bars), stickier tires, and a traction device. Best Single mod would be Huge Fat Sticky Drag Radial Tires.( Or put the slant six back in it!)

They don't call them BF Banana Skins for nothing and the hotter they get the snottier they get. Give some ET streets and run them at 16psi and see how that goes.

Drag shocks, pinoin snubber, and Hoosier QTP...the cheap way to more bite.

DemoSeed is correct....BFGs are slipperier than snot on an oily door knob.
You definitely need sticky Drag Radials.

Heres how i solved my tractions issue when i first put the 416 in the duster...drag shocks, pinion snubber, xhd leaf springs and a pair of m/t drag radials car would 60' in the low 1.40's not bad for a street car...:-D

The 904 has a lower 1st gear too. So you have a torquey cam/engine, lower first, a slippery convertor, and a light car. If you are building a G machine with sway bars and low profile tires, I would suggest sending the convertor back and getting it tightened up to stall at 2500 and learn to peddle it, as these drag suspensions will hurt overall handling.

I will try the caltracs first and then some new sticker shoes.. Can i even get a 17 inch drag radial...or do i need to order some new wheels too...

Personally,I would go with the M/T drag radials first, that way your guarantied no wheel spin!

I think Nitto makes a sticky drag radial with low aspect ratio. It's been a while, but I think they do. Maybe a 555?

The tyre issue is the big one - Those 17" low profile tyres have no footprint under load, they don't "spread" and are also a pretty hard compound.

Fit drag radials and the sidewalls "bag", you get a bigger footprint, and the softer compound sticks better also.

You may not need Caltracs - there are plenty of 500 HP cars sticking on good tyres, spring clamps and SS springs.
