Beware of Samsung LCD Flat Screen TV's I have repaired quite a few already that the main PCB goes out on. These are a known problem for these TV's

After having a plasma for 4 years it died. One repair service said a minimum of $500 to fix....but could go as high as $900.
I bought a new LCD and love it.....1080 just as good as plasma ever was.

The larger LCD sets (over 42 inches) are more expensive when compared to plasmas. The Panasonic and Samsung TVs usually get the best ratings. I have 42" and 58" plasma Panasonic TVs and have not had any problems with them. I also have a 32" LCD Panasonic TV and it is also very good. There are a lot of old problems with LCD and plasma TVs that don't exist anymore, but are still being circulated by uninformed people. I am not saying any of the posts so far are by uninformed people, but you should read for yourself about the differences as this technology changes very rapidly. I have provided a link for a comparison between the two types of TVs. I hope this helps.

I think LCD is the way to go now. We have a early (2003) Toshiba 42 in plasma.

It has been soing some weird snow thing, little white dots all over now and then, makes night scenes really annoying.

It doesnt do grey scale good, i dont think it ever did, and it has started to do ghosting, especially on night scenes also, if a person in a night scene moves, it will keep a light image of it for a few seconds.

Last one i am gonna buy

46" sony bravia lcd for me.
the choice was simple:
plasma= glass finish, glare on screen
lcd= matte finish, no glare

we have quite a bit of sun here (duh) so that was an important part of my choice. i'm very happy with it.

I have both. Sony 50"LCD and Panasonic 52" Plasma.

LCD is better for gaming and Plasma is better for sports.

About the same for movies.

For HD purposes...the picture is only as good as the HD camera filming or taping it.

But...after a few beers I can't tell the difference.

You will be happy with either.

I got the Plasma for $1000 with a five year in house warranty from BB.

I like Plasma better. Picture quality is amazing. They are costlier than LCD however.

I bought a Plasma about two years ago. Man, it goes back and forth on which is the best. Both have there pros and cons. I think the Plasma's my be phasing out. LCD's seem to be more prominent now days. The next one I get will be a LCD. I'd love to have a 73".

Is your Plasma fan cooled? If not it's likely getting to hot in the back. I'm working on using PC fans to cool the back of mine. Right now I have a small stationary fan blowing on the back. This helps with the snowy things.

Bought a 32" Samsung LCD end of oct 08 it died 23rd Dec. Tried Best Buy to cover under warr no dice. Phoned Samsung, Sorry sir it is a month over warr. If you buy one check out sellers extended warr.

A friend who's a TV Guru told me that Plasma is only good for about 4 -6 years. That they burn out after that. Also Plasma has issues if the Sunlight hits it at all at any angle.

I have VIZIO (32") and Insigna (52") LCDs Flat Screen.

I 've had them both going on 3 years now...like them both. Insignia is Best Buy's store name brand.

The company I used to work for doing Warranty Appliance Repairs and Television Repairs was directly affiliated with Samsung. Believe me these Samsung TV's are nice looking and are rated very highly by Consumer Reports but they are very problematic as to main board failure,as are Samsung Refrigerators and Dishwashers. I have several Main boards for Samsung appliances and TV's which are dead or do not operate correctly. As one of the previous posters noted trying to get them to cover the set even one day out of warranty is impossible. That is why I would always advise if you want to get a Samsung TV, get the extended warranty. personally I like the Phillips or Toshiba LCD Sets. These are very reliable.

I've seen a fair amount of misinformation in this thread so far. I suggest you do some online research from credible sources on LCD vs. Plasma. Each technology has its advantages and disadvantages.

I chose plasma for it's advantages over LCD and am very happy. I'm not saying it's better - it's different.

Thanks Guys, I'm trying to figure out what to buy to replace my 15 year old Toshiba 35" tube TV.

You guys are no help..................LOL I'm as confused as ever

I think I will get a LCD, really thought about a Sony, but the guy at HH Gregg said the Samsung and Panasonic plasma would be best for color.

I doubt any of the new TV's will last the 15+ years my current TV has worked.

Everything I have read state the life will be between 5,000 + 10,000 hours

One new thing I seen at Best Buy this past week was the resolution or something like that, one TV was 80,000 and the next one that look just like it was 100,000 and seen one in th paper today that was only 15,000. I understand this will change the picture quality, but just how much do you need for a good picture?

Everyone used to say get a 1080, then it was a 1080P 120 hz, now 1080 p 240 hz LED or LCD

For the average TV veiwer is a 1080P 120 Hz LCD equal or better than the old tube TV?

I don't game, watch much sports or movies, mainly sitcoms and the news, not much rapid movement there.

plasma's run hotter, if you put the back of your hand up to a plasma and then an LCD, you can feel the difference, plasma are being dumped by most stores because they don't last, I just bought a Broksonic 32 inch at Brandsmart for 299.00, very happy with it, whatever ya do, don't get a rear projection, family member has one and I have nalready replaced the bulb twice at 88.00 bucks each and now the center of the screen is getting burn in. LED is best, if you can swing it!!

Well if it was Plasma, LCD, or LED. LED all the way but if not LCD

I love our 46" LED nice thin, light & it doesn't seem to have the reflective glare like a plasma has. I'm stoked watching foot ball!

Cheers Jeff

We were going to get the 52" Sony V series but the place we went was sold out and we didn't want the display model so we went to Costco and got a 46" Sony Bravia.
If it was any bigger we wouldn't have been able to get it home. It didn't fit in the trunk of the 66 so I had to take out the bottom of the back seat, put that in the trunk and the TV just barley fit with the doors closed!

LOL, It's kinda funny. We bought a big *** TV and we don't get any channels.

The TV cost more than the whole car! :angry7:

i heard plasmas have more deeper black colors but dont last as long. and if you have your kids leaving fingerprints on the screen and dont clean it up right away, the prints burn onto the screen forever. i have a VIZIO LCD 1080p which is the best bang for your buck, has the best overall pictrure quality with HD recievers. VIZIO resulotion i think looks even better than a couple of my buddies' SAMSUNG LCD tvs, they looked a little grainy.

l.e.d is the way to go.....if your looking to spend a few grand......if not,buy a l.c.d ,plasmas suck....they get picture burn in the screens and they break more often, have a smaller lifetime.

L.C.D all the way.

also if you want to really see what the tv has to offer....make sure to run an HDMI cable as your video/audio feed cable.......and get yourself a nice bluray player..... its like your there...you can count the hairs on someones head almost......with as much as bluray players cost though, you might aswell jsut buy a sony playstation 3 for $250.00 ,there a computer, internet browser, game system, bluray player, dvd player, giant mp3 player,cd player, picture gallery and so so so much more wraped up into one.

Yeah, I want a PS3 but I want one of the older ones with the 4 USP ports so I can still play all my PS2 games.

Plasma has the picture quality bar none , most of the comparisons being done here are really cheap clearance sets which are gen 2 or gen 3 when the technology is at gen 9 or so , there are only 3 companies actually building plasma sets and they have spent millions on R&D addressing the common complaints ie...ghosting , heat and power consumption .the new sets refresh way faster which prevents burn in and newer power transformer tech has dropped the operating temp and power consumption dramatically . That said what most people are buying a from places like Costco or Best Buy ,how do they sell so much cheaper than the local guy ? Not volume but old tech thats right check the serial on your "New" tv from BB I bet it's at least 2 model years old if it's a clearance model maybe as much as 5 years ,in electronics if it's cheap it's old and probably obsolete . Plasmas are getting cheaper and are cheaper than lcd in the bigger sizes because the manufacturers are focusing on those sizes and leaving the smaller sets to the lcd Costco crowd so by all means do your homework and don't buy a bulb or laser/mirror type tv who says the parts will be available in 2 years when they go bad ?

Most companies will be halting production of there Plasmas. LCDs out sell them. The Plasmas were kind when the LCDs were not available in the 46" and up sizes.
