    Axle Studsss

Will try to keep this update brief. Took the washers and nuts to the nut and bolt store. Was told that the washers looked like they were grade 5 which is a soft steel. Wound up buying some grade 8 washers to try. Got home and tried them out but they would not fit. Diameter of the washers is...

    Axle Studsss

This is where I am at now. Removed and replaced all axle studs on right axle. Put wheel (Cragar SS) back on and used new lug nuts and washers. Nuts are 7/16 x 20. Had read on site that nuts should be torqued to 65 ft. lbs. Started torque at 30 ft. lbs. and then went to 40 ft. lbs. then 50...

    Axle Studsss

Been doing some thinking (?) and have decided to try some regular new studs. May get them tack welded if I can find someone who will do it. Anyhow will give update when I get finished. Thanks again for help.

    Axle Studsss

Thanks for the tips. They aren't sloppy in hole loose, just turning in the hole. May just try some with larger splines.

    Axle Studsss

Finished putting the rear end together yesterday and today I put the wheels on. Problem is when I tried to torque the lug nuts, they would not tighten up. Looks like the studs are turning in the axle shaft flange holes. Had three nuts out of ten torque down. Pulled the axles back out to...

    Backing Plate

Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner, but have been working on the rear end and some projects around the house. Sounds like I don't have anything to worry about so will bolt everything up and drive on down the road! Quick question, has anyone changed out the emergency brake cables on their 1965...

    Backing Plate

Thanks for info. Could you tell me what an indication of the brake shoes not returning would be or how much of the wear pad is worn off to have repairs made? There is no grove, but I can feel a difference in height from the worn area to the original height of the wear pad. Am I looking for a...

    Backing Plate

Seems like I read had read something about pads can wear down over time and effect the way the brake shoe works. Just wondering! And shoes are 10 x 1 3/4. Thanks, guess there is no need to worry!!

    Backing Plate

Have a 1965 Dart GT that I had to pull the differential out. Saw that the wheel cylinders are leaking and noticed on tear down that the wear pads that the lower part of the brake shoes ride on are looking worn. There is a ridge that you can feel. Is there a way to tell when to replace the...

Had axle bearings replaced two years ago and haven't put that many miles on car. Won't be able to put rear end together until next week. Will post out come!

    Grinding Noise!!

Do not have the tools to rebuild. However, I did pull the pumpkin and when I broke it loose from the rear end housing not much oil came out. That made me think that the bearings were shot. The manager of an O'Reilly's, who is a MOPAR owner recommended that I stop by and talk to the guy who...

    Lug Nut Question

Having trouble finding lug nuts that will fit my Cragar Mags. Measurements of the lug nuts are: Length: 1 1/2 inches, Shank length: 3/4 inches, Hex head: 11/16, and I think the shank diameter is .592. Anyone know where I can find some?

    Grinding Noise!!

I have a 489 8 3/4 differential with I believe Borg Warner Spin Resistant that needs to be rebuilt. Is this something that I could do or is it best to let someone who rebuilds rearends do it. It has been 50+ years since I have messed with a differential and just not sure about tackling this...

Thanks everyone for the information. Just couldn't remember and couldn't find anything online. Then light bulb went off and I realized that all I had to do was come here, ask and question would be answered.

Forgot to mention that I have a 65 Dart. So, I guess that the numbers on the two tags have nothing in common?
