Cheapest way to built a 300-350hp small block = Building a small block chevy !

well the deal on the valiant i was getting fell thru. still plan to build a small block though. I havnt decided what route to go just yet. im currently looking for a decent running la 360 or a used magnum engine. i havnt rulled out the 318 yet either. i think this engine will be a stepping stone to a better build so the main focus is keeping it cheap and using bolt on parts that are transferable to another engine.

Hey, nothing wrong with having an engine with no car.

my thoughts exactly. i plan to build the engine and trans and have them on stand by for when i find a body to put them into. i have a large bolt pattern front end ready to go already too along with a complete 8 3/4.

I'll say it again. Got my Magnum at Budget auto wrecking for $300, it's down the hill in Auburn.

Its off the Auburn Way street exit off 18, go thru the light, left on A steet, about a mile down on the left, can't miss it. About 20mins away.

the 300hp create engine was just a 5.9 longblock with an dual plane M1 and headers a couple of them been dynoed and made 320hp thats with crappy stock cam.

"Who is this heretic in our midst?"

FYI = Cheapest way to build a 500-600hp big block = Build a big block chevy ! :finga:
Dont get your panties in a wad .. The truth stings a lil sometimes ! :violent1:

OK GUYS,

a local yard has a 98 5.9 magnum out of a wrecked dakota r/t. engine has 68K miles on it and has 180-185 compression on all cylinders. they are willing to do comp. check with me watching. would come as a long block. no intake or injection. no exhaust manifolds. comes with flex plate and front engine brackets. they want $500 out the door. that is waiving the core charge.

i could get a rpm air gap for the magnum heads for 300 and sell my la performer intake for prob 125.

this is the roller cam engine correct? couldnt i just leave the cam alone and run it? need to change the oil pan to center sump. are they the same as the old school la engine?

thinking i could have the engine ready to drop in for about 1200 bucks. thats pretty good for a small block that would get me into the high 12's low 13's.

Should be a roller. Easy to pull the distributor and look.

Get a roller cam reground and have at it!

wouldn't having the cam reground make it smaller? would i need new lifters then also? could i just buy a new cam with with the specs i want and reuse the factory lifters? never played with the roller cams but from what i have heard it is the lifters that are expensive.

No, base circle would be smaller, lift may go up a bit...

Roller lifters you can reuse on a new cam. I've spun those factory rollers to 7K with decent parts. Probably won't be able to get there with a regrind, but, it's possible.

Stock roller lifters are int eh 100-160 range. Not much different than good hyd and solids.

Yes! Regrind the cam and reuse the OE lifters.
Add carb, distributor, intake and headers. Have a great day. Your done!

Miles don't really matter with the Magnum, they always have negligible bore wear and good compression, even at 200k when I got mine. I'd put the extra $200 you save from getting the block at Budget (if they are still the same price) into a rebuild kit from northern auto. Like it really needs one anyway.

What are you gonna do for front accessories? Love the serp setup.

will the magnum engine accept the LA style accessories? only really need the alternator and the power steering pump. or are the magnum brackets and alternator easy to adapt?

who would you recommend i send the cam to get the regrind done? whats it cost? if the lifters are re-useable then it would almost be easier to just buy a new cam and slap it in. then i would have zero down time.

If you dropped the entire front of the engine you could swap on the entire front from of a LA. The timing cover is thicker on a LA due to fuel pump eccentric that they use.

Huges, Lunati, Comp Cams

I'd just spend the money & get a new cam myself. But that is me and I know how deep my pockets are.

I called them this morning and they want 550 for a 5.9. i told them that i was sent to them by a member here that said he got his for 300. they said they would be loosing money at that price. you must have got them on a good day.

I sent mine to Bullet, they took all my info about the car and planned use and sent this back to me. You'll have to get the adapter for the mechanical fuel pump for the Magnum cam. The cam is going into a 67 Barracuda convertible so it's a little mild. The top end of the 90 360 is Magnum heads with some pocket/valve work so the final lift is .459, just a cruiser with some snot.

Duration @ .050 209 209
lobe lift .287 .287
LSA 114 deg
duration @ .006 266 deg 266deg
gross lift @ 1.6 459.2 459.2
intake deg @ 110 deg.

The cost was 125.00 plus shipping

Talk to them and explain what you want, I've built too many over cammed motors to make that mistake again. They turn on at 3 g's and suck from idle to then. They ain't fun in traffic!!!! The only other problem you'll encounter with this is you'll need new pushrods. The smaller base circle will mean a longer push rod.

Don't forget bullet and oregon. Tim at bullet did me well, $250 shipped both ways.

Sorry to hear about Budget. Junkyards make plenty of money, what the don't sell gets scrapped anyway. I got mine a couple years ago. That's still a hefty increase. Sounds like someone is dicking you around. Or it's the only one they have and it's out of something special. I hate junkyard a$$holes. :(

ya im not looking to do wheelies with the car. its gonna be a street toy. i plan to put my girlfriend in it once i get it all shook out. fastest car she ever drove was a fox body 5.0 mustang and she thought that was the fastest thing on the planet. if the car went mid to high 13s it would be enough to get the job done. at this point i think i may just run the stock long block with a new oil pump and pan. then the eddy rpm air gap and my 650 holley wit a set of headers and 2.5" exhaust. by the time i regrind the cam and get push rods and regasket the engine its another 500 bucks. this is going to be a slap together krylon rebuild.
