I have a right side stock exhaust manifold for a '70 340 engine that has the heat riser valve. Problem is the shaft on the valve has quite a bit of play in it and there is an exhaust leak. Can these valves have the bushing replaced or should they just be removed and a small freeze style plug be installed? Would like to keep the valve, even though not totally necessary since it rarely gets that cold here in so. Arizona, so start ups are not all that difficult in cold weather. Thanks, Ben.

Unless you are a "correct restore" fanatic, I'd simply find a way to plug it. If nothing else, get a bolt and run through both sides and snug it up. I'd guess there are several ways, tap for pipe plugs, freeze type plugs, braze, weld, silly putty.

Well.....to answer my own question. It seems a number of people on EBay have heat riser repair kits available priced anywhere from 100.00-150.00 dollars. Having a part number in hand, I decided to check with the Dodge dealer thinking the number might still be good. It still is and wholesales for less than 70.00! So I should be able to get my manifold in good working order and have a new heat riser to boot! Ben.

Id just plug it if you dont need it(warm weather driving mostly) I plugged the one on my RoadRunner when I found it wasnt working and didnt notice a bit of difference.(meaning worse start up or drivability)

Maybe you could share the part number with us?? Thanks

All of the parts in the kit appear to be the same as the factory valve on the 340 manifold except for the flapper valve itself, which is a smaller diameter. But I should be able to reuse the original flapper valve after cutting the factory spot welds, cleaning it and welding it into proper position.

Thank you for the useful information. The 1968 - 1970 340 models only with manifold casting #2863549. uses part number 3004574.
