So I finally dropped the engine in last night it looks amazing. 6 weeks of hard work i went thru every nut and bolt bearing and runner.
THIS IS THE PROBLEM: is the second compression ring upside down? Is the ring's face cut at an angle? Im pretty sure its not because its a low compression motor and ive only seen this on hypo.

i put new rings in( chrome moly top ring (faced) iron second ring stainless oil ring). Sealed power 5/64 5/64 3/16
I clocked them all correctly coated with 5w20 an installed TOP ring facing up. Just didnt check the 2nd ring's face.
Ive rolled it over plenty of times, i lapped the bearings. It felt really good at the crank and plenty of compression

A picture would really help here. Rings are usually marked with a dot for "up" or an angled edge the "normally" is on the inside edge facing the piston. I've seen some that face up and some that face down. Lastly, some rings don't have any markings whatsoever and it does not matter which way they face. It's all dependent on the manufacturer. If you can post up a picture, it would really help here.

Did you save the package they came in. and especially the instructions?

You could run it and check the oil consumption... it usually will go up considerably if there is a 2nd ring problem. You have a 50/50 shot.....

Got a ring PN? If it is E178K for a 318, then the 2nd ring has a bevel on the inner edge and a taper on the outer face so will have a definite 'up':
Federal-Mogul Motorparts

A 50/50 shot 8 times and depending on how you go about fixing the problem and what identifiers are available to fix the problem you could have some where around 40320 permutations.

run it
do a compression test
post results even if compression is mostly top ring
you may have to pull it and flip some or all of the second rings
you could have some right and some wrong
cross your fingers that you do not have an oil pumper instead of a oil scraper

It depends, some second rings are a "Napier" type with a scraper hook that helps clear excess oil off the cylinder walls, while others have a taper face that essentially does the same thing. What brand of rings and P/N did you install?

The above is what Sealed Power shows for their 318 moly top ring kit for the 2nd ring shape except for a 45* bevel added on the lower, inner surface.

So i actually cranked the motor over amd bore scoped the walls I'm not seeing any oil but that could change under combustion. The engine looks amazing ill have to post pictures. I'm now having ignition problems no spark. Coil tests good, so does the cap rotor and wires. I think the pick up coils and ecm are toasted. I put new pick up coils in it and im pretty sure i just fryed the 5 wire ecm on the firewall. I wanted to upgrade the ignition anyways though. Anyone know of a good distributor that dosnt have any electric stuff. I just want points.

Did you happen to order them from a company (Summit, Jegs or other) you can pull up your previous orders and look at the part numbers you bought. Might give you a clue.

And sorry, If I didn't know for sure if things were put together right. It would be coming apart. Do it right - or do it twice.

On your ignition, moving from electronic ignition to a set of points is a great leap backwards. Take a look at a trailbeast electronic ignition or make your own HEI setup like one on slantsix.org.

You won't see oil use that way. You just gotta take it apart or run it. It won't eat up a quart in 20 miles (like an improperly installed oil ring), but it will do so in several hundred miles.

Old thread. I am getting ready to install these rings E-178K-40. no discernible mark or bevel on the top ring.(actually a slight bevel on the top and bottom.) A pip on the second ring.

I have NOS dual point distributors and 48oz race points if u need such or stock single point set ups.
