Background:

Been restoring my 1970 Satellite which was operational prior to restoration. Drivetrain never removed. Steering column was out.
I connected my shifter to the trans but when put in neutral the wheels won’t spin but for a few inches then hard stop.
Disconnected the shifter and manually tried to find reverse on the trans but again wheels wont spin much like only a few inches of rotation the drive shaft moves a little (yoke slip). Feels like the trans is in gear.

I have engaged the emergency brake and indeed the wheels are solidly locked. Thus I don’t believe it’s a stuck brake.

This is probably a simple issue as I am new to automatics. But I can seem to find reverse and get the trans connection to the linkage set up.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Is the kickdown in its proper location, I believe all the way forward at the trans or all the way forward at the carb, make sure its adjusted correctly.

The shifter is isolated from the transmission currently by removal of the front rod. Therefore I am only moving the control lever and rear rod, but still cannot find neutral. The problem is this that in all control positions I cannot get the rear wheels to move ie neutral. The trans seems to be locked in gear but that doesn’t make sense.

Disconnect the driveshaft and see if you can spin it in neutral using the driveshaft/yoke.
If you can, then try to spin the rear end, still with the driveshaft disconnected. 50/50 if the issue is the trans. (or linkage), or the rear end.

Thanks Ill give that a try tomorrow AM and report back!

By chance the rear brakes new? and adjusted right?
NOt 100% sure. Anything is possible. However when I apply the parking brake it locks up the wheel no movement at all (as it should). When I disengage the brake I get some slop movement but thats it. The slop might be drivetrain. Not sure but I will cut the problem in half and take out the drive shaft to isolate the two ends…

It sounds like you're in Park. I forget with shift lever on the tranny has to be forward or rear ward to come out of park. If it's forward now pull it to the rear and wheels should turn. In any gear wheels should turn, just not in park.

So I just disconnected the drive shaft and to my gleeful surprise the drive shaft rotated with the trannie. Meaning no locked bands in the trans!!!

I also noticed when the drive shaft was disconnected and trying to turn one of the wheels the backing plated rocked with the wheel……Must be the brakes and not the rear gears right? There is some play in the back and forth movement. The rear gears were recently installed by a diff shop so I would think it’s not that.?……

If so then maybe the brakes are camed in?. Possibly the adjuster locked up over the last few years of being rolled on the dolly’s…???

Let me know if this sounds like my next step?

Try and release the adjuster through the back slots and adjust out the shoes via the star wheel?

Or should I take the wheels and drum off and confirm wtf is going on in there?

CONFIRMED the right (Passenger) drum was locked. I tried to finagle the adjust and release via the rear port hole with no luck lots of frustration and dirt in my eyes….
Pried off the drum and confirmed it. All good now. Just need to rebuild the rear drum brakes..
