I have a 1973 Dodge Dart Sport 225 Slant 6 with automatic transmission. This is the first time the oil light came on. It stayed on long after the engine was turned off and the key removed. The oil level reads full. Could this be a wiring issue? Anyone have any idea what the problem is. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Check the wire going to the oil switch. It's probably grounded somewhere, although it should go out when the key is switched off.

I don't trust the "idiot" lights on any vehicle. All of my cars have mechanical gauges to keep track of everything.

When my car did that, the bulkhead connector was melted and the wiring was shorting under the dash. I barely dodged a fire.

I still have the oil light on mine and it works fine. Although I did add a manual oil pressure gauge under the hood.

Get ahold of a pressure gauge and test the pressure. If it is acceptable, Try a new sender. If yours is seeping oil it probably has issues.
I had a cheap one that leaked. Before I had a chance to replace it, it grounded internally and turned the light on. So I found an NOS Chrysler switch on evilbay.

Definitely needs replacing if leaking but doesn't explain light staying on with key off.

I use the idiot light and a manual. No one drives with their eyes glued to the manual, but should notice a red light if it comes on. It's just an alert.

Unfortunately, by the time the idiot light comes on it's too late. That is why I put mechanical gauges in all of my cars.

Guys, you need to re-read the OP.
His light is coming on with the key off and removed. This is an electrical issue, not an oil pressure issue.
