Gas tank for 1970 dart

The first one is the correct one for your car, but it's inferior as it has no vent.

The 2nd one is a definitely no-no, that's the 4-vent emissions style in 71, commonly known as CA emissions.

If you want the best direct-fit gas tank get the 72+ tank like the Spectra CR11E.
What you're looking for is the tank with the single vent line in the top-middle facing forward, above the sending unit. Best vent design of the stock tanks.

Sir, I was reading your comments on the 4 vent gas tank and maybe your knowledge would help clear my concerns for my Dart. I have a 71 Dart that originally had a 4 vent tank. It needs to be replaced so my son bought one off the internet that was a single vent. In your opinion can I still use the single vent tank and make it work properly with the 4 vent setup or should I just order a new 4 vent and just R&R?

Unless you are trying to restore your 71 to perfectly original I would not order the 4 vent fitting tank, the single vent tank you have now is superior. All you need to do is splice the single vent into the line that goes up to the passenger side fender in the engine bay. You can simply cut that line near the vent in your new tank and splice into it. At that point you can remove the vapor canister thing from the driver's side of the trunk and discard it

Just to be clear the vent line that goes to the passenger fender in the engine bay runs right along the front of the tank so very easy to cut and splice into.

Thanks Sir, very clear and helpful. Just saved me $150.00. I'm in your east county. If I have a question down the road I will reach out. Thanks again!

reach out to you. Excellent website.

This is great information and i appreciate it!. I have a question. I am doing the same as the OP. I am looking to get the single vent 72+ style for my 1970 dart with EEC or ECS with the 4 vents. My question is do i just tap and into and run the single vent up to the engine bay via the steel line in place or do I plug the single vent tank and run a vented filler tube? If i run the single vent up to the engine bay where is the best location to vent? should it be to the atmosphere or a filter or to vacuum or positive crankcase ventilation? Hopefully I am making sense of this. Thank you!

be careful i went through this ,the tank for 68 ,69 does not fit the 70 dart the filler neck hole is to far foward and the angle of which the filler comes off the side of the tank is wrong. i ended up using the 71 dart tank and plugged the vent ,for the 70 has none

Yes that seems to be my issue as well. I think my replacement tank was for a 69 and the hole is too far forward for my 70. It looks like to get rid of the 70 EEC 4 vent system, a 72 tank fits and the hole is in the correct location. I dont mind running the single vent tank but i am trying to figure out if I need to use that single vent in the tank or add a vent in the filler neck. Whichever is cleaner and better to do is what I would like to go with.

If you have the original 1970 filler tube which is vented to atmosphere then the first tank will be correct. 1970 dart gas tanks didn't have vent tubes--the filler tube was vented.

Thank you. That’s what I see in the repair manual I have as well. I got the car with a short filler tube to fill in the trunk and the quarter panel was filled. Luckily I was able to pop out the plate and bondo and run a new filler tube. I can’t seem to find a vented filler tube for a 70 only for 67-69 so that’s what I got. Seems to line up good but the metal vent line hits the top of the quarter panel so I maybe just run a hose up then down to the original location.
