Oil smells like gas...

-
Just curious, did you check oil level on lipstick? Maybe if it's obviously high, definately a red flag. Not sure how long you've been tweaking it, or short run/stop cycles, or hard starting,...ect? Could be a combination of any/all of too much dumping gas down carb, too high pressure overcoming needle/seat, bad diaphragm, on top of old oil.

Start with basics! Fresh oil. Tune to where it starts without priming carb every time or cranking it forever.
No raised level on dipstick... I did change oil.
Hopefully I'll get to bottom of it soon.

Love Demons I Have 2 now. This is pic of the day I brought last one home in August. This one makes #5 I've owned. Drove to Fayetteville NC to but it.

Lots of things could cause it. Excessive fuel pressure (no more than 5# needed), a heavy float in the carb and the fuel is bleeding over, a choke stuck partially on, a bad fuel pump diaphragm leaking fuel into the crankcase, and over time, even a weak ignition system or a poor tune up. (a hot spark and complete combustion is what you need)

Look for the carb issues first. They are your likely culprits. Change that oil and filter before you do bearing damage.

Did you ever verify your float level settings? Curious if you determined what was causing your problems.
I have not checked float levels.. Have not gotten to the bottom of what happened.
I changed the oil and had a fellow member smell the filter and he didn't seem to think there was a gasoline odor.

May check / rebuild carb soon anyway as I'm still trying to track down the engine shake issue I've had since day 1...

Quick check for fuel in the oil
Pull out your dip stick and if you can light it with a butane lighter it has fuel in it

I have a nice 72 340 short block with TRW Pistons

Quick question to regards of putting a splash of fuel in the carb and it fires up. How much running are you doing? If it isn't running long enough to thoroughly get up to temperature for a period of time, just short starts, that alone can be your problem. If not getting up to temp, the cold running engine with its cold oil will not boil off the fuel that inherently gets into the oil. Engines need to see full operating temps to "boil" off moisture and fuel. This is super common with people who don't have the car finished and just start it occasionally, only do very short trips, etc. Marine industry is likely the worst for this.
