    A833 questions

I use pure silicone grease to get that O-ring started . Somebody told me that stuff is the slipperiest grease money can buy. IDK if it is or isn't but for what it costs, it outta be! Second best is the grease that comes with your treadmill, for greasing the belt/track. I haven't tried it but I...

    A833 questions

    1) The O-ring on the reverse lever has to be the best you got, cuz the oil level is higher than the ring, so if it doesn't seal, you got a leaker and worse is that you get to take it apart again. 2) the front Retainer has to be a tight fit into the BH, in order to keep everything concentric. 3)...

    A833 questions

There is no order to the brass rings except as I noted in my post. If your trans was not slipping out if gear on deceleration, and if you did not have to hold it in any gear for to keep it from popping out, then I would reuse the synchronizers. Judging by the looks of your brass, the...

    A833 questions

I have built dozens of A833s, and hundred to thousands of other Manual transmissions, And I can tell you that there are only two reasons to trash a brass ring; 1) is if the ring sits very low on what you call a drum, but which I call a conical brake. If it sits too low, it will just get worse as...

    A833 questions

Remove the loaded output shaft from the tail, then just bonk the nose on the floor and it will fall right off. The chipped teeth on that reverse gear are nothing; in fact, as far as those go, yours are about as clean as a used gear can be. As for bearings, the way most people test them, there...

    Transmission arms

No lock nuts, no loc-washers. The factory nuts had a wide base on them which was serrated. Any and all nuts that you install there will work themselves loose, and away goes your neutral gate. This happens because all these decades later, the interface between the studs and the levers, have...

    Ultimate swap confirmation

The trans Does NOT have to come down to swap the TO fork. The fork comes out easily enough with just a tug. To get it back in, it only takes a careful alignment then a heavy bop to get it started, then a final push. I have done this many times.

Trying to figure out what this is it came out of my 64 barracuda 318 4 speed

the split from 3.09 to 1.92(.62) is a long compared to from 2.66 to 1.92(.72) But the pay-off is to be able to run at least one less rear gear size, on the hiway. and honestly in first gear, I don't even notice it anymore. Typically it is said that the A833 runs best with 3.55s or better. That...

Trying to figure out what this is it came out of my 64 barracuda 318 4 speed

The last A833 Mopar direct drive ever built was in maybe 1974, so "Newer" is relative. IMO the 3.09low, if that is what you have, for street use, is already the best core available, and it can be relatively easily converted to a slip-yoke style.

    4 Speed Shifter Change

I never liked those either. and especially not the T-handle, any T-handle.

    18 spline A body 4 speed

If it's for street, and for a cam peaking at or near 5100, then I highly recommend the 1x23, Commando gearset, in the which, the 3.09 low gear will allow a 16% lower gearset number, like 3.23s. The rest of the gears are the regular ratios. But if you plan on running up near or into the 4 series...

    A833 Speedo Gear Drive Question

Well slightly this and slightly that is an error of up to 5%. And another 1/4 inch error is another .78 error in circumference. The point I was trying real hard to make, was how prone to error your method is. Not the Chart, it is fine. Whereas the Percent difference never doesn't work, and...

    A833 Speedo Gear Drive Question

To get an exact number, you just calculate the speed difference you want, in percent, and get that same percent difference in number of teeth. If your speed difference is 5%, then your tooth count difference will also be 5%. If your speed-O is indicating slow, to speed it up you will need fewer...

    Ultimate swap confirmation

Just my opinion, but the Pistol Grip in an A-body looks out of scale to me. Well truthfully, I never liked the look of them anyway, nor the feel, and I hate how long the throws feel when banging gears. It's like I could read a book between second and third. and worst of all, you only have the...

check your crankshaft end-play. Excessive end-play can put the flywheel into the inspection plate, or worse. Or maybe the plate is just bent or missing screws

a833 OD vibration in 4th gear at 3000 rpm

If the rear end is hanging down during the test then the pinion angle will be considerably different than at ride height. So, I hope your jack stands are under the axle.

    Which clutch and PP?

I have a modest 367, that by it's trap-speed in the Eighth is putting out 430 hp. I have the 1x23 Commando 3.09 low trans and 3.55 gears, that takes off with a starter gear of 10.97. and NO traction aides. I also ran the CenterForce II setup, but found the disc way too aggressive, and like you...

And so it begins,,,,,, 5-speed Duster swap!

GoogleMaps says you're about 3.5 hours from me; jus saying that's a short tow. Nicely outfitted shop, with a 4-poster, and a tire-machine even! I'm a lil jealous. Not really, lol; I'm 71 and not much interested in working any more. All the best to you.

    4 speed bracket on hump

I actually agreed with Poster #2 NOT because I knew that, cuz I have never seen that bracket before, not since 1970, but because I thought it was a joke and I found it funny as heck!, lol. IMO, the factory shifter location was too always too far forward in every 4-speed car I ever owned. I...

    MTF Comparisons?

I have been driving various Mopar A833s, on and off, for a total of over 32 years, since 1970, and IDK what a third-gear crunch is, unless it is the sound that these boxes make when the synchro is not biting properly on the brake any more, and the slider starts crashing into the clutch-teeth...

    Pilot shaft diameter

Yes you need a bushing and up here NAPA stores carry it. It's kindof an adapter bushing, as, to do this right, your crank would need to be drilled and resized to fit the factory bushing. After the bushing is in, you kindof need to "degree the crank" to make sure the centerlines of the crank...

Difficult to get A833 four speed into reverse

After the shifter is thru the gate, and the the other levers are properly detented in Neutral;; There are three possibilities; 1) a failure to depress the clutch pedal far enough, or 2) a dragging clutch, or 3) a faulty interlock system As for #1 push the seat closer to the pedal and try...

Two different 833 manual trannys for an a body

The gear sets are interchangeable, set for set. Either box can be converted either way, and/or to Slip-yoke. You just need a matching Tail and Mainshaft. Personally, I prefer the longtail in my 68 Barracuda, with the shifter relocated to the rear, to between the buckets. And I prefer the...

    A833 shifting problem

One thing not yet mentioned but most likely not related, is that the external levers often will not stay tight enough to prevent the levers from slipping just a little on the flats; and so, it will not hold it's Neutral gate adjustment. This can be a hard frustrating thing to find. But as to...

    What's broke?

Friend, them's fighting words. And yes, I know you were kidding. I ran Dectron II for many years, probably many decades on account of the synchros bite way harder, than with EP oil. I only switched to 50% 85/90, or 85/115, whatever is handy, as I noticed the wear on the cluster pin. Straight ATF...
