"Idiot light" vs. Oil Pressure Gauge

YES both the light and a mechanical gauge UNDER THE DASH NOT UNDER THE HOOD. By the time the light goes on much of the damage is done. Changes in pressure as things START to go wrong can be seen as changes in typical gauge readings. Fluctuation in the needle can indicate low oil levels after...

    stamped steel LA rocker arms

I know that Direct Connection offered heavy duty stamped rockers - I have a set on one of my engines, but the overall dimensions are the same, which is the question... this is on a 318 street engine and I wanted to make sure that any of the stamped rockers that I have around would fit. Has...

Need help with H2O/front cover assembly.

Is there a driver's side timing scale cast into your timing cover? Those high mount PS pumps are for Drivers side lower hoses and you are switching to passenger side lower hose, right?

Need help with H2O/front cover assembly.

Drivers side timing and passenger side timing require matching harmonic balancers because the timing mark on the balancer is in a VERY different place to match where the scale is...

Need help with H2O/front cover assembly.

The power steering pump is another change between 1969 and 1970. Driver side water outlet means that the PS pump is mounted really high. 70 and up with the passenger side lower hose uses a timing cover with integral timing scale on the drivers side.

Need help with H2O/front cover assembly.

Big change in all that between 1969 and 1970. The big deal is to match all the components: timing cover, water pump, harmonic balancer and the radiator and brackets. I've just been helping a guy who bought a 72 Duster with a 69 340. 69 front cover and balancer with 72 water pump and radiator...

small block timing cover 1970 and up

I have a stack of small block timing covers stashed and someone local needs one (currently has a mix of 69 and 72 parts with no way to see the timing marks). I pulled out the stack of 70 and up covers that I have and they have 2 very different seals in the lower hole: a smaller hole in the ones...

    318 diagnosis

When you drop in the right gaskets the clouds will part and a shaft of sunlight will fall directly on your engine (cue fanfare an angel choir in background) and I will bet all your problems will go away (at least having to to with this engine). From the sounds of the engine I bet it turns out to...

How would you rebuild this 318?

IMHO If you are going to spend significant time out on the highway (60 - 80 mph) even with the OD 4 speed I would bet you will find the rpms a bit much Remind me what gears you have in it now...

How would you rebuild this 318?

No to 2.02 valves in a 318 bore. You might have to notch the block just to have it not hit and if you do get them in the shrouding would negate the value of the switch. I think you have a great set of heads for a street 318 just the way they are!

    Restart the rebuild

Steve - how hot did it get??? it's possible that you have air trapped in the block that just isn't making its way out. can you see the water circulating in the radiator? While it's cold you might crack the two block drains for a bit and then pour the coolant back in the radiator.

    Sanden A/C Compressor to fit a 273

The Classic Auto Air brackets come from Bouchilon (BPE) so don't pay CAA's mark up. (my brackets had Bouchilon printed right on the bracket). If you are using factory AC pulleys DON'T use the Classic Air/Bouchilon brackets that put the AC compressor and the Alternator on the same belts. The...

    Belt guidance

Just to be sure that you know - using that factory non-AC water pump pulley will realign your belt grooves for the system that is shown in post #18 - the water pump and alternator on the crank groove toward the engine and the Power steering on a belt of its own in the crank groove toward the...

Look at the mount shape in post#7 (which is correct) compared to the picture of yours. I agree that there is something hinky (that's a technical term...) about yours compared to the NOS mounts that I have on the shelf.

The fact that it has dual exhaust will boost what you get from the swap. The engine is an air pump. If the exhaust is restricted (stock single exhaust) the higher the rpms, the more it make a difference. The intake and exhaust work together for the best gain from each. I would bet 20hp at...
