A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Spent another hour-ish lunch break in the garage today. Got the ignition wired, fuel system plumbed, radiator hoses on and poured 2 gallons of coolant/mix in. And that is when I remembered that I never got back to the last header bolt that needed to be put in. Specifically the rear most one on...

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Spent another lunch hour and a half away from the desk today. Got the belts on, radiator and fans are in and the carb is mounted. Also found my box marked "Shelby ignition" and laid it out on the workbench. It's just your basic mopar electronic set up. Have to route some fuel lines and figure...

Thanks. I'm trying. It's harder to find time to get him out there with me while school is in. Was the same way with his older brother when we built his 65, but we pulled it off in 2.5 years.

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

It's been a few weeks and finally made a ciuple of lunch hours of progress the last few days. Got the bottom side buttoned up and the front of the engine accessories bolted on. Also modified the original exhaust Y pipe to fit with the cheap headers. Had to take 3 inches out of the right side...

    Milling ex manifold Question

With the iron heads on the 318 we started with, we also had to grind the casting numbers off of the right side manifold. When he upgraded to an aluminum headed 408, we gained another 1/8 inch of clearance. Go figure.

    Milling ex manifold Question

That was what we needed to clear the inner fender on the right side.

    Milling ex manifold Question

We took about an 1/8" off the ones we put on my son's 65 B'cuda. No issues.

    Pre-lubed Hydraulic Lifters

I voted prelube. Dad always prelubed and pumped them up somewhat the old school way. He'd stand them up in a metal coffee can, submerge them in marvel mystery oil, or the thinnest Kendall oil he could get and hand me a pushrod saying "here ya go. Start with one and push it down and let it up -...

So after the initial file out to the mark is gone, it's also hitting here and still at the original spot.

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Sumbitch. As luck would have it (and I apparently have none today), I've got to pull the motor back out. Had previously bolted the bellhousing up a couple of months ago. Today, spent my lunch hour away from the desk and was buttoning up the bottom side - flex plate to torque convertor bolts...

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Got a little bit done today. Spent my lunch hour installing the 2" lowering blocks on the rear. Going for the level look. Still gotta replace the steel brake line from the distribution block to the rear. All the fronts are done.

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Just a quick update here. Have made no progress since June. Between vacations and having a pool put in, I just haven't been back to it. I had hoped to have it running and ready for paint by now....... How she still sits and waits.

    Let’s hear a 340 story

Not a racing story, but a tale of a 340 none the less.... in 1987 or 88, I gave a kid $20 for a 340 out of a wrecked 70 Swinger he had picked up for nothing more than wanting the center of the 8.75. The car was roached out, bent up front end, trashed interior. It did run, but had a he'll of...

    1980s 318 questions

Drill, tap and plug the little holes under the exhaust ports. On the intake side of the head, if you mean the opening around the heat crossover, no biggie as they go nowhere. Motor mounts - you need the brackets for your car. The truck brackets are different. Same for the oil pan. The truck pan...

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Got all the front brake lines done the other day. Dropped the motor back in last evening. Only got as far as all of the bell housing bolts are in and tight. Might have to shim the right motor mount up a tad. The cheapy header looks like the flange is about just a hair of a fraction of an inch...

Well, Jakes removed the original exhaust system last evening. Parts needed? A dual exhaust system and I am going to replace all of the 32 year old brake lines.

Bolted on the intake, the vintage DC valve covers and the right header is hanging there. I need to get bolts for them - the bolts that came with them are 3/8. I also need to get a nipple for the bypass hose and for the heater hose. My sons both asked when are we dropping it in place...

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Got the heads bolted on the other day. Found out the shafts Paul gae me with the 273 adjustable rockers are not mopar shafts. Sooooooo.... On went the original stamped rockers. Set the intake in place, but have not bolted it down yet.

Stripped the heads last night. Talk about some carbon build up on the back side of the valves. Geez. Not sure how I'm going to get them back together yet after I clean it all up. The rented spring compressor barely squished them enough to get the keepers out and when releasing the tool, the...

Used my home made balancer put-er-on-er this afternoon. Need to beg, borrow, rent or steal a valve spring compressor cuz the heads are next on the bench.

A True Low Dollar Backyard Build

Dug the J's out of the shed today. Some of you may remember the truck load of parts a guy at work gave me last year - heads, cam, blocks, rockers, rods, etc..... this pair he said he ran on the same 340 with the cam he gave me. Didn't really look at them too closely the day of the give. Just...
