Big Block Cylinder Heads "915 vs 906"

But why 906's? If we are speaking in todays world 452s would be a better replacement. Non racing application. They already have the hardened seats. Flow wise there isnt much different. That mopar muscle article is really good and does well at breaking down each head.

This is basically how I calculated this in an earlier post. After doing some research. My percentage was based on my peak power assumption. Thanks though fellas. And Rob your ok bud give it to me straight that works too.

My calculations arnt exact. Given the fact that 452 heads are listed at 88-92cc mine were milled flat just a skim.. Im guessing id be closer to that 88cc but who knows. I never had them cc'ed.. guess in theory my compression could be off a few tenths any how.

Good to know. I guess either its 9.8 or 9.4 still gonna have a bad motor in a light A body right!:burnout:

Im already turning in circles lol. So many different levels of advice. Id like to keep the compression but then like the idea of using parts i have and saving money. Not to mention the idea of not having to tear it down again..... My reading suggest a 3-4% loss per pt of compression im at maybe...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-8519pt1/overview/ Them would be the one that came in my kit. After looking it seems they have a compressed thickness of .039. I come up with 9.4 to 1 with them and 9.78 to 1 with the others. So about .4 tenths of compression loss. Also this kit came...

I had actually thought of that to be honest. A fel pro blue would put me in the 9.5 range now im in about 9.8. I have those gaskets here on hand from the gasket kit I bought. Just didnt want to lose compression is all.

Just talked with the machinist. He recommend a few things and pressure testing was like $25. He recommended to run the piston down to the bottom and fill the #1 bolt holes and jackets full of water let it sit and check for seepage. He mentioned coating the gasket not so much as a sealant but to...

    head gasket

It strikes me that when I did the build I checked on the coating. From what I read it use to be a must. But with advancements in gaskets the new ones had a coating. Right or wrong I dont think it would hurt to use a copper coat on the new ones just for spite. 440 source has a bolt kit for like...

does this make it PITA to get off If i ever have to pull them? Knock on wood.

    head gasket

Yes if im following what you guys re saying its possible the bolts have been stretched beyond spec not allowing them to apply proper clamping force. The length is what i need and i can measure what I have. I have no issue buying new parts if I need new parts.....

what is it yall coat your steel gaskets with?
  22. 72ScampTramp

    head gasket

Ok so an area of question is the bolts. Is there a tolerance on the bolts that I could measure the length to find if they are out of spec?
  23. 72ScampTramp

    head gasket

I reused the stock bolts. I did clean them up and they were lubed before torquing. I did also blow out the bolt holes. Which appears that wasnt the right way to do things. Ill get the new gaskets and look into bolts.

well I made it to the gasket. I didnt expect it to jump out and say hey its bad here but I really dont see an a problem with the gasket. No burnt spots, or breaks to the bore, no separation of the gasket. I will have this head checked again to make sure....

    head gasket

Thanks for the replies. The heads were ported before i got them. Not full port by any means. Before the build the block was cleaned checked and machined. The heads were also cleaned checked and machined. Checked I mean magged. As of now it is only the #1 cyl. I suspected to do this properly ill...

you bring up an interesting point. I did the initial torque of the heads. Would it be worth going back and retorquing to see if that be an issue?
  29. 72ScampTramp

    head gasket

I know its not the best theory. But i just had both heads and block done and maged. Put it together and a little run time. Which is why i figured head gasket. Only way I will find out is to pull it down i guess.

Why both whats the theory there? Gaskets are new and so is the motor. less then 5miles
