wtp over drive trans behind 340 in a 68 a body what can i do

Following is a post I made on a similar subject back in 2008. Of course, you'll upset all the Mopar purists that have to have their cars be 100% Mopar. I haven't pulled the trigger on this yet due to a couple of economic setbacks along the way, but still thinking really hard about it when the...

    Open 489s worth anything?

What year B-body? Generally, a B-body housing can be used in a A-body by simply relocating the spring perches and using a different wheel backspacing. My '69 Dart came with a B-body housing when I bought it from the previous owner. I'm simply going to have it narrowed so I can use it with the...

    Which rear end is best?

OK, so here's a question that maybe deserves its own thread. At what point does it make sense to look at a fabricated rear axle housing like the Moser 875? At the price A-body 8-3/4 housings are going for, it's almost cost effective to go with a fabricated housing. I was just on the Moser...

    A500 pan on a 904

Check www.mopartsracing.com. The spacer is the same for both 727 and 904 trannys. You can buy the spacer/longer mounting screws kit as PN P4510054 at $22, or a spacer/filter/pan gasket/longer screws/etc. kit as PN P5249321 Filter Extension Package at $32

    727 vs. 904???

Just to clarify, this is why the 904 "consumes less power" or, there's less engine horsepower loss through a properly built 904 because of the smaller, lighter components and less internal friction. I'd suggest making your choice based on your intended use. Primarily race, then go with a built...

    GM OD tranny fit?

In all fairness, the $3300 Art was talking about was for a modified 200-4R and converter to live behind a strong 360. It also included all other mods (cooler lines, crossmember, etc.) and labor. The only thing it didn't include was a new driveshaft as stated.

    GM OD tranny fit?

Following is a post I made on a similar subject back in 2008. I haven't pulled the trigger on this yet due to a couple of economic setbacks along the way, but still planning to when the funds are available. Contact Art Carr directly at California Performance Transmissions, he's been building...

    700r4 shop install?

I'm seriously considering the 200-4R since Art Carr told me it will fit in the stock A-body trans tunnel better than the 700R4. I like the gear ratios better as well. Suggest you double check to make sure you won't need to do any trans tunnel work to make it fit.

    Ever wanted Overdrive?

I bet you're seeing the trans tunnel surgery necessary to fit a GM 4L80 overdrive automatic tranny into an A-body. I've got an alternate suggestion that I'm considering for my smallblock '69 Dart: an Art Carr built 200-4R 4-speed overdrive automatic. It fits in a stock A-body trans tunnel, is...

Difference in trans = better milage

MoparPat - The final drive gear ratio in both the 904 and 727 trannys is 1.00, so no difference in RPM at 70MPH in 'Drive'. However, the 904 has less HP loss due to lighter internal components. The standard gear ratios for both the 904 and 727 are as follows: 904 trans 1st: 2.70 2nd: 1.54...

Hurst quarter stick with bench seat

Hey, Vitamin c. A million years ago I ran a '69 340 Swinger with a bench seat and a B&M auto shifter on the floor. I'm 6'3" and didn't have any problem with the seat all the way back. My 5'3" wife didn't drive the car so there were no worries about a shorter driver. You can mount the shifter...

Is this any good or will it work for my 73 duster?

Just to throw another option in for your thoughts...see what local pricing might be on a complete B-body 8-3/4. If complete, you would get big bolt pattern axles and bigger brakes. You can run a B-body rearend in an A-body if you change the spring pad spacing. You can either get wheels with...

    price?

Scamper - FABO member swisswill has a current post ("Cleaning out my stuff...") for a B-body 8/3/4 for $50. Looks like it's complete with the 11" drum brakes. You'd just need to get it shipped from Michigan.

    price?

I can't speak for all B-body 8-3/4 housings without doing some research, but my '69 Dart came with a B-body rear end when I bought it from the previous owner. It just had some narrow 'roller' wheels on it. You can always buy rear wheels with bigger non-standard backspacing to center the...

What do you guys think 3.58 posi

JMO, but I think his price is high. Is it an A-body rearend or will it need to be shortened to fit? I'd want to see ALL of the receipts and know the shop that did the work for that kind of money.

    700R4 GM in a Swinger?

Here's a post of mine from a year ago along the same subject but using a 200-4R instead of the 700-R4: I've been thinking about a 200-4R behind a 360 magnum crate motor in a '69 Dart for the past week or so. Talked to several tranny companies about it and finally contacted Art Carr at...

    3:55 or 3:91?

Interesting. With a 28" tall tire, at 60mph the rpm is the gear ratio x 1000.

    3:55 or 3:91?

Back in the early '70s, I ran 4.89s behind a built 340/727 combo on the street with my old '69 340 Dart Swinger. Did not drive on the freeways with it, but what a rush coming off the line with that combo!

    pinion snubber

489, 741, and 742 cases should all have the same external mounting points - yes the 741 snubber should fit the 489 case. Are you using stock snubber or upgrading to adjustable?

    b&m shifters & 8 3/4 rear ends

xtreme - I had a cable-shifted B&M in my '69 Dart racecar a million years ago and remember it was zip-tied to a spare hole on the 'bellhousing' of the 747. Never did have a problem with it coming in contact with the headers.
