Cylinder surface area does not have a lot of effect on force on the connecting rod. It is well accepted that part of rotary engines poor fuel economy is the large surface area exposed to the combustion. So apparently the small bore, long stroke engine may suffer poor combustion and power...

You have to remove the speedometer cable connection. 72 should have a clip on the cable housing to remove the cable. Unplug the wiper switch and the headlamp switch. Also the gang plug for the lights/oil/brake etc. Pretty much just plug in stuff.

Actually not to bad. Because usually they came off a real car that somebody’s owned and they will only sell to a real car. It’s usually a pretty good price that’s what I found out building in Tom Mile‘s car. They do not like to sell it to people building clones

are you using a socket with the rubber washer inside that grabs the plug so it won't fall out while removing/installing? If you are not, it doesn't take much to have the socket misaligned with the plug which causes contact with the metal socket to the ceramic insulator causing it to break...

You probably did the amp meter bypass? I did one a while back but no relay was required. Do you have a diagram or a description of how you completed it? Also, the voltage regulator and alternator are the only components that can cause high voltage. Have you checked your meter with another?

I run a Champion on my 69 Street/Strip 440 duster for 20+ years and I have be pleased with it. However, there are now cheaper ones now available.
