340 Cold Valve Lash Unknown Cam

022-024 is too loose if the correct lash is 016 or less. These lobe profile series had 0.016" lash or less [ some were 0.012" ]. And this is not a complete list.... - UD: NF series - Crane cams: TLF, F13, 4440, 4168, 4341, 4188, 481 - Isky: Magnum oval track. As I said in post # 18, you can...

340 Cold Valve Lash Unknown Cam

RRR, Post #9. Loose can damage the valve train, so if lash is unknown, better to set tight. It will NOT cause damage to set to 012-014. Setting too tight, like 6 or 8, might cause burned exh valves because the valves are not seated long enough to transfer heat to the valve seats. Really only...

"Idiot light" vs. Oil Pressure Gauge

You can toast the brgs in less than 5 minutes. A buzzer gives you an INSTANT WARNING & allows you to shut down the engine in seconds, not minutes.

...using MVA to give your engine the idle timing it wants. Once again in this thread, we see the IGNORANCE creep in about idle timing. By running ~30* at idle with that cam, your engine will have the smoothest idle it can, use the least amount of fuel, run cooler, & is less likely to have an off...

"Idiot light" vs. Oil Pressure Gauge

I have an oil pressure gauge [ standard in my car ] & I added an idiot light sender. A $2 buzzer is connected to the sender as an immediate, audible alarm. As AJ says, you cannot always be looking at your gauges.

340 Cold Valve Lash Unknown Cam

If the correct lash is unknown, then you certainly do NOT want to set lash at 028/032". Many modern grinds use 018 -020" lash. Ultradyne [ now Bullet ] use 016 lash. Setting lash way too large slams the lifter into the cam flanks, & not the clearance ramps as designed, shock wave to the valve...

    Thermo quad 6138s ?

You can see the different acc pump set up on the 9XXX carbs compared to the 6XXX. The 9 series pump arm has slots in it for the pump rod, & the pump rod has a hook in it to engage in the slot. The 6 series has a different arm & round holes. It uses a rod that is secured with a circlip.

    Maximizing flow limited combos?

Jon Kaase won the EMC using a cam that had less exh duration. I have been using these for over 20 yrs. Quite a few EMC entrants have used reverse pattern cams. You would not have seen that decades ago, but you see it now or lower ratio rockers on the exh.

    Cam Phasing

I doubt crank strength on Chrys cranks around the keyway would be an issue because they are so beefy. Look how small the crank nose is on a SB Chev, & only a 7/16" bolt.

Powell Machine had some storm damage but let's talk cams anyway.

ALL of the events have some importance, some more so than others. I do not agree with Powell's selection of the most important event. That would only be determined by dyno testing, not some computer program, because there is no computer made that can guess what all the variables that are...

    Maximizing flow limited combos?

I would use a sol roller cam. After selecting the LSA & duration for your desired power range, I would then select lobes with as much lift as your valve train will operate with. Once lobe lift is known, pick a lobe series that has as much area under the curve to maximise the 'valve open' time of...

Powell Machine had some storm damage but let's talk cams anyway.

Like a lot of others, Powell claims that the intake closing is one of the two most important cam events. Sorry, could never see the logic. An engine needs to ingest air to make hp; ingest more air, more hp. At IVC, there is zero air ingested. I would think what happens before the IVC is more...

    Tune up questions

I can tell you this: engine idling; if turn the dist CCW [ to advance the timing ] to about 28-30*, the engine will: - idle faster [ making more hp ] - idle smoother - make more vacuum - run cooler. I would do this, re-adjust carb, see if it helps the stalling problem. Backfiring could be many...

    Idle Transfer Slot on secondaries?

You can run without PCV. But these carbs are designed to pull about 3 cfm of the ~20cfm of idle air from the PCV. Without PCV, the air has to come from somewhere else...such as small holes in the t/plates. I no nothing about Progression Ign Dist......but if it does not allow you give the ign...

    Idle Transfer Slot on secondaries?

PCV. Once you have the idle timing correct, adjust idle mixture as best you can. With the engine idling, in gear, remove the PCV [ it will probably be in the valve cover ]. If it is rattling, it is not working; there is not enough vacuum to overcome the internal spring. If the pintle is not...
