I did that exact upgrade earlier this spring. It will take another 2 litres with the deeper pan once you have the TC filled.

Yup, it’s time to change the fluid anyway.

    Trans fluid $$$???

Yes but you still need the drain the fluid to get the bung in and it’s not like I changed the fluid last year.

    Trans fluid $$$???

I’m looking at replacing the transmission pan on my Scamp with one that has a drain plug. I’ve already pulled the trigger on a new pan so at some point this year I will replace the pan. I looked at buying fluid and was a little startled at how much the fluid costs now. I’m pretty sure it...

    Identifying the rear

Yeah that rear end is not original to what rolled out of the factory in 1975 on any A body. The 8 3/4 rear end now in your Duster was last installed at the factory in Dusters in 1972.

    8 1/4 rebuild

You mention your putting the ~400hp drivetrain in a Valiant. There’s more space in a Duster and you distinguish between the two in your post already. Without hacking the rear wheel wells, you’ll be limited on the size of rubber to utilize that power. I’m not sure if skinny tires can tell the...

    Help identifying my differential

Welcome! Now a lot can be changed on a car 46 years later but if it was born with a 8 1/4 and a 727 from the factory, it should also have a 360?? What are the details on your Duster? We love pictures!

    904 kickdown issues

In the top photo, the 2bbl kickdown rod is on the left. It’s a 1406 carb with 4bbl throttle bracket and carb bracket for a Mopar. Also needed to adjust slightly the kickdown lever down beside the transmission.

That’s good to hear about your experiences so far with TCS in Langley. That’s a short drive for me and I think i’ll be in the market for a new TC in the next year or so.

    1974 Duster - What rear axle do I have, 7 1/4 ???

There isn’t the need to rush out and find a 8 1/4 before you drive an inch with the 340 in front of it. Is the 8 1/4 a stronger long term choice? Absolutely. However, the 7 1/4 isn’t going to blow up as soon as you move the gear selector into Drive. If you’re doing smokey burnouts at every...

    1972 scamp 318 STOCK

Counting the bolts on the back of the rear diff will for sure tell you if it’s a 7 1/4 or a 8 3/4. However, does the car have a front sway bar or heavy duty cooling package? That might be another clue as to what rear diff it has.

Does this need to be Replaced?

I replaced the rear trans mount on mine with a new one. Energy suspension mount from what I recall. No press required with a new mount. Supported the rear of the trans with a jack like you are suggesting. I also replaced the rear seal on the transmission tail housing at the same time. I would...

Well, here we go with the rear end swap.

Uhhhh, the roof in that green car has already been worked on. The fact it’s red means if it was a vinyl top car and the rest of the paint (green) is original paint, the original colour under the top would have been cream/white. That looks like filler with some red primer that been sprayed on...

    Gear ratio help

Good idea upgrading the 7 1/4 to an 8 1/4 if it’s already howling. Not much point fixing a 7 1/4 unless your on a tight budget. I’d consider buying new springs as any used springs are just that; all are 40+ years old and will need to be re-arched sooner or later. As others have suggested...

    904 Kickdown linkage

The angles/geometry of your throttle/pedal cable is off. It should be in a straight line from the throttle cable/kickdown bracket to the carb attachment. You’ve got the same problem with the kickdown rod too. You may need an adaptor for Mopars for your carb which corrects that geometry.

    904 Kickdown linkage

What’s the geometry look like of that linkage from the throttle bracket to the carb? With a lot of threads visible on that linkage, you might have a 2bbl rod trying to do the job of a 4bbl rod. Here’s a comparison of a 2bbl rod and 4bbl rod. [WANTED] - 4-bbl kick-down rod

    7.25 to 8.25 Swap Questions

Not quite. The Dodge Dart (111”) and Dodge Demon/Dart Sport (108”) had different length wheelbases. If you took a driveshaft out of a 318/904 Demon and installed it in a 318/904 Dart, and both had a 8 1/4 rear end, you would be short. If you did it the other way around, you would be long. A...
