Well, I drug home another one

For anyone still following along, I finally got to make some progress and final assembly is complete. Shout out to American Powertrain for fixing their mishaps with incorrect hardware and forgetting a bearing retainer spacer. Next time you see it, it will be in the car. Hopefully soon

Southern California - no place to drag race in the birthplace of drag racing

You have first hand knowledge and in my opinion that’s much more solid than hearsay. But, what you say is in the ground there, and what I heard is in the ground there are complete polar opposites with regards to natural or unnatural things. I’ll leave it at that.

Southern California - no place to drag race in the birthplace of drag racing

What’s funny is I heard a rumor last Saturday while I was at Irwindale, that core samples have been taken and the land is not usable for residential or commercial growth. Could just be a rumor but it made me question all the reasons I thought the track was going away.

    Slant 6 timing chain lubrication?

That’s a 1/4” npt pipe plug with a 045 hole drilled in it. Just an example

    Slant 6 timing chain lubrication?

Do you have a drill press with a chuck large enough to hold the plug? That’s how I prefer to do it.

Southern California - no place to drag race in the birthplace of drag racing

I would make the argument that drag racing now is AS popular or MORE popular than it ever has been. Maybe in a different form than you’re used to (no prep, back of track, street etc) but the popularity is there. The tracks that embrace change will survive.

Great post. Hopefully you can enter if he has another challenge which he’s talking about doing on a few different engine platforms.

Southern California - no place to drag race in the birthplace of drag racing

Chuckwalla Perris Eagle field Pomona (street drags may be making a comeback) And the owner of Irwindale has made mention of the purchase of land near Kern somewhere to open a new track.

    Slant 6 timing chain lubrication?

I don’t understand why you guys have problems with small drill bits. They are small yes, fragile yea, but all that means is you slow down, use correct pressure and speed and keep it lubricated and you’ll be fine.

Project Cheap & Nasty Updated With Back Story

You have, but I don’t need to watch the rebuild of a cheap and nasty slant. (I will watch, I just dont need to). I will have absolutely nothing of any value to add until the spinny mufflers show up. So get on it!!!

    Scored a new ride yesterday!

The NB is a great platform. I have raced many, many miles in one. Coilovers, brakes, and a set of 200 treadwear tires and there are not many cars that can beat ‘em on a tight course. Same car.

    5.9L Magnum questions

Stock magnum 5.9 pistons are 1.612 H116cp are 1.660 Magnum 5.9s I’ve measured stock are .051-.053 in the hole. So that piston puts you .005-.003 down in the hole on a nominal deck height. That’s pretty good for bolt together stuff. You can use the head gasket to set quench. But as I said above...

    5.9L Magnum questions

I’d not replace the pistons if you do not plan to balance it. That’s a necessary step in my opinion even for a quicky build. And you might want to check the clearance between that h116cp and the closed portion of the magnum head if you’re above deck. Head gasket thickness will be important.

    Forged 340 Crank in a 5.9 Magnum

I’ve never done an 833 to a magnum, but I am right in the middle of doing a T56 magnum to a 5.9 magnum and it was very straight forward. From the searching Ive done it seems the 833 is a direct bolt on affair.

    DON’T BE FOOLED!

Yea but that’s why junkyard LSs with a turbo make the power they do. The heads are basically factory race heads. Same with gen3 hemi stuff. Ask your buddy if he’d trade off his B1BA heads for a set of X heads and see what he says. Tell him it won’t matter because he has boost and see what he says.

    DON’T BE FOOLED!

“Within reason” is a big qualifier to your statement which is basically true, until you try making big power, (+1000hp or so). Boost is just a multiplier and the more power you make NA the easier it is to make power on boost. So at some point the head is a restriction and needs to be upgraded.

    Forged 340 Crank in a 5.9 Magnum

Yes exactly. I’m running W2 race heads on a magnum bottom end, oiling them externally in to the rocker shaft stand and via the pushrods.

    Forged 340 Crank in a 5.9 Magnum

This one is for a T56 magnum but you get the idea. No machine work necessary.

A pilot bearing that costs $28 bucks.
  26. T

    Forged 340 Crank in a 5.9 Magnum

Just use the magnum 360 crank. You won’t make enough power NA to hurt it I promise. Sell the 340 forged crank to someone who’s restoring something and will pay big bucks for it.

    Congrats to member Scampin

Well, the heavier it is, the more impressive it is. I can’t imagine you’re as competitive as you are, and are anywhere near factory duster weight. But at least now we know it’s a secret.
