Project Cheap & Nasty Updated With Back Story

-
Ok, so I thought I was gonna have to buy some stuff. Turns out I have a good set of retainers, a set of brand new valve keepers, and what appears to be a good set of valve springs. Do any of you know what green stripe slant 6 valve springs are? I'm only going up to "about" .450 lift. I'm not opposed to buying some valve springs. I'd get the Comp 901, of course, but chit a mighty. Have yall seen how high they are now? Dangit man!

Excuse me sir, but Cheap & Nasty? I insist if you intend to name your project after me, at least be thorough and get the title correct. That would be Cheap & Nasty, Badly Twisted, Wildly Inappropriate, and Somewhat Unhinged with Inoperative Filters.

Our legal team thanks you in advance for your cooperation.

I wonder if the valve covers and intake manifold are going to be the same color as the block and head or maybe a different shade of green to tribute a dollar bill for it's cheap theme?

Slanty springs are weak, just going to '68 & up 273/318 springs will bump the open #'s 30-40. You should have a bucket full of 'em....lol...
I don't have any V8 stuff. My plan is to run one of these used slant 6 camshafts I have anyway, so I'm probably just gonna use the decent looking slant 6 springs I have. Cheap & Nasty.

So I got all of Cheap & Nasty's valves lapped in. All the valves look great, but a few of the exhaust seats do have some pits. They'll have to do, because this is cheap & nasty. Also, the green stripe valve springs are a little fatter and a little taller than the unmarked slant 6 valve springs I have, so they are "a bit more" valve spring it seems, so they're gettin the green light. So there's more green. Takin a break, because this stuff takes it outta my back. I ain't a young man anymore.

So I'm at a stall. The only valve spring mics I have go 1.6 - 2.2, so I don't have room to install the valve locks to measure the valve stem height. I gotta get the shorter mic, so I'm held up for a bit. Oh well.

I should have a couple used sets of V8 valve springs if you get in a bind.

I gathered up a set of intake and exhaust mannyfold studs and wire brushed them all on the bench grinder. There are 14 of them, so new ones would add up quickly.

Cheap & Nasty has a camshaft. I was able to salvage the camshaft that actually came out of it originally. Hit the lobes with the wire brush on the bench grinder and polished them with some 400 grit emery cloth. The fuel pump lobe has a little bit of a trench worn in it but as they say, I'm gonna send it. lol

So I've been thinkin on it and even as cheap & nasty as this project is, I couldn't in good conscious use that camshaft with a half tore up fuel pump lobe, so I picked a much better one out and cleaned it up instead. It measures in at .405" lift. At least this way, I will start the project with the stock mechanical fuel pump. I'm pretty sure, if all goes as planned, I will get it running good enough to easily surpass what the stock pump can supply, but at least this way, I can use what I have right off the bat, without having to build another fuel system. I'm going to have the original lifters refaced. @replicaracer43 Sean has agreed to do the job. I'll be sending those off to him first of next week.

Good call, I`m all about cheap but I wouldn`t use it either.
That cam would be a good candidate for a weld it up and grind it back down, and see if it caused any runout from the heat, experiment.
Yup. After looking at stock camshaft specs, This one is likely the last version of the solid lifter cam which was .416 lift. I don't think it's worn that much at all. I measured it with a dial caliper, so I'm sure I errored it up. lol At any rate, this is what it's gettin. It may be all done by 4500, but hopefully it'll get there quick. lol

Checking IH with a mic? Do you wear a top hot and gold chain for assembly?

: D

You have options.

1) Stack washers under retainer, measure washers with dial caliper or micrometer.

2) make a spacer of known length out of pipe and use valve spring shims to fine tune the measurement

3) Use a ruler or yard stick

It's not a space ship.

I have a better idea, how about simply making a gauge the exact length the height You want, for what Rusty's doing too tight is just right, & amount of shim if needed will be a direct feeler gauge measurement.

I have some used V8 valve springs if you're looking for some. Cheap & nasty, just the way you like em !

I will skip ahead a little and suggest Vixen to be considered for an F8 dark green metallic paint job to go with green block!! Just thi  :steering::popcorn:nking ahead!

I thought I'd covered a lot of ground so far. lol
You have, but I don’t need to watch the rebuild of a cheap and nasty slant. (I will watch, I just dont need to). I will have absolutely nothing of any value to add until the spinny mufflers show up. So get on it!!!

Oh I know. But I have two 1.6 - 2.2 mics already, so I do need a short one. Plus I have lots of valve spring shims, so there really no reason not to do it right. I could use a machinist's ruler easily, but I need a short mic anyway.

Howards has a really nice off the shelf grind for a slant ground on a 112 that would work well, but the funds won't allow. So cheap and nasty it is. lol
