I have the same problem, I will build and engine, and let it sit for years before installing it in something.
Or build a different engine for the same car.

Just so happens the .040 Holley is numbered 40. Not all of them are like that, though. 122-40 I believe is the Holley number. The Holley jets come numbered~ which one would be .040?
This is an early block. 1966. I like the color on yours!
Naw, it's gonna get plastigauged. No plans on porting anything.Just tell me you aren't taking the cheap part so far as to skip the Plastigauge.
Going to port any oil or water passages while working on the block?
That's Pontiac green, ain't it?
Cheap & nasty's cylinder head. It looks a lot worse than it is. I'm not using the 66 casting. I don't even know what year this one is, but it's a revised chamber head. But the reason I'm using it is because The guides and seats are pretty nice. I knurled the guides a while back. I know that's divisive, because there are two camps regarding that. Some say it's ok to knurl and some say it's a short lived, easy fix. The Comp 901 spring is what I plan on running. So I figure with such light spring pressure and a very mild cam it will last a while. Besides, remember cheap & nasty? I do plan on getting it milled just enough to clean it up. All I plan on doing is lapping the valves in. I'm even going to use some blue Viton umbrella seals. Cheap & nasty.

I thought I would try something like that, but if I posted it on here, I'm sure I'd get made fun of. I'll check it with a straight edge first. You don't need a machine shop to clean up that head surface. Use the concrete floor or use the side of a 8-12" grinding wheel. A liberal dose of wd40 will help displace the swarf.
It's not right by today's standards. Or yesterday's for that matter. Back when all we had was rent money and book money (school) we fixed plenty of engines using farmer tricks of days gone by.
*gnashing of teeth*I sealed them with Permatex #2. Just to give yall somethin to argue over.

This is how we did it in the 70s.I'm sure I'd get made fun of.
As long as you don`t cut the top off of pistons with a BAN saw, it`ll be alright.I thought I would try something like that, but if I posted it on here, I'm sure I'd get made fun of. I'll check it with a straight edge first.
