1974 Plymouth Valiant Scamp - Restoration is a strong word

After adjusting the kick down linkage, I went for a casual drive this morning. A couple of times, the throttle pedal stuck open. I was able to unstick it by lifting the pedal with my foot. When I got home, I took a close look and it seemed like at part throttle, the kick down linkage was barely...

Quick update… I swapped the vacuum lines in the engine bay. Engine vacuum at the canister, and the heater control valve. Everything now seems to work exactly as it is supposed to. Pretty neat!

Hearer hoses and control valve are installed and there do not seem to be any leaks. I’m not getting what I would call hot air in the cabin. The heater hoses both feel hot at the heater core. I played around with the some of the vacuum actuators, which are slow and not moving all the way. I...

I have not, but the old heater control valve was falling apart, which leads me to think that’s why the heater was bypassed. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

The transmission rebuild finally finished a few days ago. I got it and a new torque converter reinstalled Thursday night, and took it for a 60 minute drive yesterday. All good! Durning the downtime, I decided to paint the grille black. I know it’s not “correct”, but it was already faded and I...

I dropped off the transmission Tuesday with a guy who was recommended by several people. He expects to be done before next weekend. My license plate arrived. I was surprised to discover that Arizona Historic Vehicle plates are made of actual Arizona copper. While waiting on the transmission...

Ammeter? We don’t need no stinking ammeter!

Yeah, it does, but not totally unexpected either. I may do the rebuild on my own, but I'm leaning towards taking it in somewhere. I assume a transmission shop can bench test and assure there are no leaks without having to put it in the car. Oh well. At least the transmission is fairly clean, and...

It looks like I’ll be rebuilding this garbage.

I ripped it back out in 90 minutes this time, which I was pretty proud of doing it on my own. I pulled the pump and the gasket seemed suspect. When I installed it last night, I used a little gasket sealer to hold it in place, but I wonder if that jacked me up because I didn’t coat all the way...

It’s all back together, but… Leaking as bad or worse as before. Blah. At least the headlight relays work.

The transmission came out yesterday. It was filthy. After a long amount of time scraping with a putty knife, a wire brush on a drill and several cans of brake clean, it was much better. I told my girlfriend the other day I think half of working on old cars is just cleaning dirt, grime and...

Okay, back to work! I think this oil pressure switch will work better than what was in there. Yep! I also started the bigger job of dropping the transmission to fix the leak at the front.

Before wiring in a relay to my hidden kill switch, I thought it out, made sure I understood how the relay worked and even made this cool diagram. Then I got impatient a couple days later when actually installing the relay, ignored my drawing, hooked everything up, turned the key and watched...

This is not the update I was hoping to make... I didn't pass my inspection, but I didn't fail it either. There were two super nice officers who explained right as they started they were skeptical they'd be able to complete the inspection. They said they needed to match "secret numbers from the...

I disagree. The plate has no contact with the carb - there’s a gasket on top of it - so conductive heat from the plate isn’t an issue. And even if the plate gets hot, it can still direct hotter air around the carb. That said, I don’t the think the plate acting as a heat shield will have any...

My inspection is tomorrow and I’ve been watching the Phoenix weather forecast creep up daily and they’re now predicting a high of 107°. I’m running a 26” radiator with a shroud so I think I’m good with engine temp, but I have seen the fuel in the carb boil while in my garage. So after some...

Oh look, shiny copper coming off the alternator feed! I didn't get pics under the car, but I got the trans shift selector seal and the tail shaft seal replaced. So far, so good. I got another new power steering shaft seal in and replaced, that seems to be holding too. The air cleaner was...

So, about the trans fluid leaks, I knew the selector shaft seal was bad, but I also discovered leaking at the tail shaft, so I pulled that seal and ordered a new one. Then I attacked the shift selector seal. When I realized how tight it was under the car, I decided to pull the crossmember...

Tail Shaft Leak - was "Is this gasket available? A904 Extension Housing Snap Ring Cover"

Definitely no holes in mine. It came out pretty easily. The outside rubber is cracking, so I'm guessing the inside wasn't sealing so well. Ordering a new one now. Thanks again, everyone!

Tail Shaft Leak - was "Is this gasket available? A904 Extension Housing Snap Ring Cover"

Original post updated, title edited, new pics added in original post. Trans fluid is coming through the tail shaft seal and dripping down. My understanding is that the tail shaft seal is really just a dust cover to keep dirt from going in, not meant to seal fluid. So if that's the case, what...

Tail Shaft Leak - was "Is this gasket available? A904 Extension Housing Snap Ring Cover"

Edit: After a closer look, it seems the trans fluid is coming through the tail shaft seal and dripping down. My understanding is that the tail shaft seal is really just a dust cover to keep dirt from going in, not meant to seal fluid. So if that's the case, what would cause this type of leak...
