I Almost Flipped When I saw This

It doesn’t take much to have to reject and scrap a bunch of cast parts if you aren’t doing constant dimensional checks on CTQ’s. Lucky for them they caught the issue before all the machining time was wasted. I had to deal with crap like this from vendors for years. Hurts the supplier, hurts the...

WMMC Swap Meet 9/22/24 Waukesha, WI.

Thanks for the reminder! I've had conflicts for the last two year and haven't been able to make the spring or fall shows.

The one and only set of ProMaxx heads I’ve ever touched

That very well may be, but I have not seen a commercially available CNC head that approaches any of those numbers. The exception might be the Bloomer head, but that also has a lot of hand work from my understanding, and they command a premium price. I'd love to see a list of people that rework...

The one and only set of ProMaxx heads I’ve ever touched

I bought a lightly used set of the standard 171cc heads from a member here and I'm excited to try them out. The transition from the valve job into the bowls looks really nice. Machining is very well done and complete. I'm no expert but I struggle to see any easy pickings to improve them. I...

Pin hole in cast iron head

Is there any access to the back side of the pinhole through the water passage? If there was, I'd try flooding the area with a thinned epoxy. You wouldn't need much to cover the hole and the material would be pushed against the wall by the water pressure. Should never leak. If I had to...

New build A833 18 spline with Gear Vendors OD.

That looks like a nice setup. Can you share who's flywheel you are using? What's your thought process around the lighter unit, ie why? I'm going to a 4spd from a 727 and am considering the GV unit because I'd also like to go from 3.55 to 3.91 or 4.10 gears. Just not sure if I want to try a...

    New member from Switzerland

Very nice looking car with a special story. Congratulations. Switzerland is one of my favorite places. I worked eleven years for a Swiss company and lived Neuchatel for a year. I am very familiar with the Swiss dedication to quality, and my time there served me well throughout my career...

Mystery Lube? Trying To Figure Out What Spray Oil Is Being Used On This Power Hammer

Can't help you with what's in that particular bottle but I spent 15 years in the tin can industry and can tell you that the punch presses that make the ends for the top and bottom of the steel cans have a mister that dispenses a wax in a light solvent suspension onto the dies. The wax provides...

    Ram towing mileage

That's a true statement. I got my daughter a newer vehicle and was going to hang onto her old CRV to drive during the winter and because it gets better mileage than the Ram. But, I soon realized that between liability insurance and registration, it will cost me $650 a year just to park it in...

    Ram towing mileage

2020 Laramie 5.7 with E-torque, 8spd, 20" wheels, and 3.55 gears(I think). I get 17/18 around town and 18-20 on the highway depending how deep my foot is in it. Recently towed my daughter's CRV back to Wisconsin from Waco, TX and averaged 12.5-14.5 mpg depending on whether we were in the hills...

    The ever-so desireable 308 Heads

Curious what you think is wearing out faster or preventing rebuild on an aluminum head than on a cast iron one? Valve guides, seals, and seats are wear parts and replaceable on both.

Looks like a 30-06 Ackley. Remind me of what the parent cartridge is? I love wildcats but I need to better select my applications. Necking, trimming, forming, and neck turning 500 cases to shoot ground squirrels with is a lot of work.

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Probably because the ones available now are more expensive than the standards and don't sell because you won't see any effect of the special chain set in 95% of applications. If potential chain slack really bothers you, the only solution is gear drive or belt drive with a stiff tensioner. Gear...

    New shop for projects

Looks like a nice space. I'm jealous. Is there a reason that you didn't set it lower and/or level the area to minimize the amount of material you'll need to build up the floor level?

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Millions and millions of cars have been running around for billions of miles with that much or significantly more slop in the timing chain set for the last sixty years with no negative effect. I bet you can't see any variation in the timing at idle and under load it sure isn't going to cause a...

    Shipping suggestions and tricks.

Adding to what oldkimmer suggested for the post office, opening an account for UPS saves me at least 20-25% when I’m shipping in the US. I have a little side hustle repairing oil pans and making small parts and shipping can be a significant part of the overall cost. I’m glad I can save customers...

    Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

I’ve always felt like I was missing out not having one. A friend did and it was a decent shooter. Got busy in life and other things took priority. Now I think I need to build a 10/22 with a 16” medium weight barrel to work with the Mask muffler I have on the way. I don’t need it, but it just...

    Diff ratio help

That trans, if I found the right data, is essentially a four speed with a double overdrive. 5th gear is .74/.80 and 6th is .60/.50, depending on the version. With that 6th gear ratio you can run a pretty steep diff gear and still have very reasonable rpm range at typical highway speeds. I...

Yes but it’s been a while. I was Wisconsin 1000 yard Master class champion in 2009. Had the pleasure of shooting/scoring with Bryan Litz on the same target a couple times. One smart cookie and a really nice person. Very helpful. Now that the kids are less work and I’m retired, I hope to get...

    A833 OD Iron case repair

$$$$$$$ If you have the equipment to repair it, there is a significant savings. They don't give away the housings, they are heavy, and shipping is ridiculous these days. Probably worse in CA than down here from what I've been hearing, especially if you have to cross the border.

    Electric Vacuum pumps

When I was looking into the hydro boost for my car I was advised that the freshly rebuilt Federal pump I have wouldn’t work. Has to be the Saginaw type. I haven’t gotten any further. I’m most likely going to figure out how to make hydro boost work. A vacuum pump seems like a step backwards.
