    Steering column coupler removal?

Hi all- Quick question. I don't see an obvious spline in the coupler thread to align with the spline on the steeing box. The steering box that I pulled out also did not have any splines on the thread.... Is the smal hole on the body of coupler the way to align this? Also, there was no...

Rebuilding the steering coupler in preparation for the new steering box. Some jerk WELDED the pin! Thanks a lot. Things were going a little too smoothly anyway....I felt I was about due for a bump in the road. Incidentally, does anyone have any tips on separating the steering box from the...

    SM Head Install... forgetting anything?

Or maybe the shaft is just that loose (where they slip together). Either way, it shouldn't be that easily "fixed."

U-joint on steering shaft: float or bolt down?

There are many reasons the shaft or column can move back. Why take the chance. All manufactures allow for vibration. Some use rag joints. But all are held securely to the splines on the steering box. They must have a reason for this. Even the coupler has a pin to prevent it from coming...

    SM Head Install... forgetting anything?

@74Scooter thats what it seemed like. The little shoes slid farther down the shaft into the coupler body. The pin hole pretty much looks the exact same as before.

    SM Head Install... forgetting anything?

What's happened is, someone has "serviced" or disassembled the coupler for "some" reason in the past and left the small roll pin out that keeps the shoes from coming all the way out. You can see "dowel pin hole" in that diagram above.

Shouldn't a 65 box have the bolt that pinches the coupler to the shaft. Not a roll pin. I think that box may have been changed out before.

Looking for experienced opinions on removing k-member.

Obtain plugs for the brake hoses, and since this is an overseas car, no idea if they are American 3/16 inverted flare or not. Since you surely will replace the upper arm bushings, separate the ball joint and remove the upper arm. This now leaves the spindle, steering linkage, and so on...

1964 Valiant "Get Runnin & Drivin"

Ok, I got the coupler rebuilt. I got the rebuild kit from @Rick@Laysons a while back. It's not correct for the early A body using the clamp on steering coupler. The new spring will not fit, because of a larger "bump" in the center. Also of course, I have no need for the new roll pin, or the...

Just get the kit to rebuild the coupler and pack it full of grease, And then do the recommended bearing Upgrade, man you will love it! Unfortunately there's so many potential places in our old rides to get the steering kind of squirrely,, so it's just best to eliminate Any problems! Earlier in...

    SM Head Install... forgetting anything?

No offense taken but the coupler has looked like that since I have owned it for almost 3 years. Not saying that is right just how it has been. I will work on trying to get those shoes all the way in the coupler body. Per your roll pin comment, all the holes line up there just isn't anything...

The shoes will not move.. you will need to bring the coupler up and pin it.

The Great Pumpkin - '71 Duster

While dealing with the paint mess, I worked on swapping the steering shaft. I switched out the collapsed one for the original column shift one that I took out of the car 10 years ago. What I failed to realize was that since it was a column shift shaft it does not have a provision for a lock...

    Steering U Joint Questions

Well that answers my question about one thing. It takes a roll pin. That would be good for disassembly, but is it safe? I would assume it is if they're on the market. Thanks for linking that, but it's the wrong size. I need 3/4 dd to 3/4 smooth bore.

    steering column shaft

Some couplers have that tiny pin to keep the coupler from coming off. I added a small screw to accomplish the same thing. I also drilled my shaft where the plastic injection holes were and used a couple nylon screws to hold its length in place of the broken injected nylon.

The Great Pumpkin - '71 Duster

Despite the prior aggravation and do-overs, the column is done and back in the car for now. I'm anticipating having to take it out again for one reason or another but at least it's off the floor. Out of the three options I described in my last post, I ended up using the shorter power...

No problem and thanks for the rebuild push. I fully understood the boat steering and laughed when I read it. You should see the rest of the car. Plenty to do with a car that sat for 30+ years, best I can tell. I really appreciate all the info that I get on here.

    In/out play in coupler

No. The large pin that holds the shoes in place only holds the shoes in place. The tiny pin only keeps the coupler from falling off. Neither one restricts the action of the coupler itself. You're thinking to hard about it.

    Air Fittings

You asked "what are these". I tried to answer as completely as possible. When I buy them at NAPA they are on a blister pack identified as a "C" fitting. Why do they call them that? Who turns out the light when the freezer door closes, where does the fire go when it goes out, how many angels...

Safety pin in the coupler. Dowel pin.. not the pin holding coupler to the splines on the box. A coupler with 2 pins ceases to be a coupler, no?

    Removing trans linkage arm?

The rubber seal can be worked over the cross pin. That pin is a very tight press fit. You can drive it out with enough hammer and effort but getting it centered with a hammer isn't easy. I dont change out that pin unless its well worn. Good luck with it.

    Mopowers' 66 Dart Build

Next was assembling and mounting up the steering column. You guys know what a pain it is to assemble the coupler and seal clamp. I made a tool to assist out of some scrap. While I was at it, I installed a set screw for safety, as these earlier couplers didn’t come with a safety pin.
