How did putting trick flows and a roller cam (~size?) work on the 318? I ask, because I've got a mechanically sound 318 and a core 360 in the shop corner. What kind of rpm do you spin the stock bottom end up to?

It's probably a great match for a mild teener. Is the transmission shifting correctly?

With a 2500 stall and 3.23 gears, dual plane and 650 carb? That cam is comps replacement 340 HP camshaft with only 218 @ 0.050 duration. Its got all the velocity it needs to fill the cylinders........

I am not sure why anyone would be celebrating 318 day when you have 340 and 360 days available cheap. 318 day doesn't have enough daily compression available to be able to run a cam that makes the day torque down low, well, unless you put a 2800 day converter and run in 9n 4/10:rolleyes:

Does anyone know how far down a 1972 318 pistons are? In a book I have it states in 1972-1981 they are .056 down from the top of the bore but with those calculations in the Diamond racing compression calculator it gives about 8.5 to one compression but our factory manuals state 8.2 compression...

I don't know why were trying to make this 318 work you got a 440, at best get 318 running with minimum cost gather all the parts needed for the swap then swap, or just start the swap now and have it ready for spring. There's nothing wrong if you got a decent running 318 and add 4bbl cam headers...

These guys did it with iron Magnum heads. A good set of alloy heads and a decent cam with a 4 barrel of course will get you there. I would spend the extra and run a roller. But...........................no you are adding to the budget and it's not a cheap build any more...

I haven't dyno'd my 318 so i don't want to comment on parts... but i am here to watch the 318 haters go off :) BTW.. i went with trickflows on mine, the price is a little higher than other brands but i have more faith in that company to not send me garbage. Also went with Mancini roller...

Mopar engineers thought dual exhaust was good for 20 HP on a '73 2 barrel 318. How much on a 440 that also had a hotter cam, 4 barrel, and slightly less restrictive manifolds?

well, for better or worse, I have a 318 thats about to get a mild cam and probably a TQ. I do have a couple of AFBs on hand too, but at the moment one of those is Plan B. 800 cfm on a 318.. Hmmm....

Personally and in my experience I cant see seeking out 318 parts (302 heads) the natural progression that I went through as a young man is play around with the 318, cam, headers carb exhaust, ran good but want better ... seek out and find a 340-360 ...that is the natural way of things not...

honestly, if you're going to build a stroked 318, I'd start with an '85-91 block. they have factory roller cams, 302 heads. the roller cam is the biggie. you can get it reground, or get a roller cam and reuse the stock roller lifters at a much lower cost than the retrofit roller lifters...

My setup is stock, 318/904/stock coil. modifications include Airgap, Holley 750 vacuum secondarys, Tti long tube headers, comp cam, Accel brass cap, Accel 8mil wires and Blue streak points. Going on 10 years without any issues.

The 365/375 horse 327 had a cam in this range. Speed Pro still sells it. Put it in your 318 along with a nice intake and carb and some headers and see where you go. I bet that 327 had 10/1 compression at least which the 318 lacked. A 300° cam is pretty nasty especially in a small cube engine...

I now own the magnum crate engine Holdener was using for testing. With the 212/218 cam and an rpm air gap it now makes 365.

Well I got off track but I agree, the logic minded 318 guy will eventually realize that performance with a 318 isn't impossible its just more logical the the 360 . I agree that, a 318 will sound good with a cam but those down in the hole pistons and sub 4 inch bore leave much to be desired...
