I've serious wondered if I could take one of the 'electronic' overdrive automatics from a Magnum pickup, and just make a key pad that electrically operates each gear. #1 is first gear, button 2 is 2nd, and so on. An electronic pushbutton manual automatic.

Just following up to say that I ended up using the LD340 intake. I got everything back together and running good and then I installed a GearVendors Overdrive which I'm absolutely loving!

In all honesty, I'd go straight for the M1. Especially with the plans for steeper gears in the future. When you swap in the GV overdrive, go straight for the 4.56 gears.

I don't know about the numbers Steve. Overdrive transmissions are pretty obvious with the extra gear bulking up the rear of the trans. Lock-up can be identified by the input shafts.

I agree. The .78 ratio is something but not that impressive for an overdrive ratio. The .69 of the 500/518 is fine.

Correct. 1993 230horse V/8 auto Dakota 3.55 rear, the overdrive failed, locks up the rear tires. Performed overdrive delete and run straight 3.55. The truck don't care, I don't care. 2 mpg drop at 70. No drop in town. 300k and climbing. Also have one with 3.91. Probably wouldn't work for that one.

The 518 bolts up to the 273-318-340-360 but the overdrive part of the transmission is larger in diameter than the transmission tunnel in the cars. ALL 500 and 518s were in trucks and vans where clearance wasn't a problem. Hey....If you can cut and weld, it isn't that hard to do.

The 3.55 gear didn't "lunch the overdrive" as in not caused by having 3.55 gears

I've got a temp guage and cooler and so far all is good. Didn’t go over 160 on my last 140 mile trip.

I definitely would like to go OD. Which tranny do you suggest for this application? EFI swap would be a for sure thing. What do you mean by "matching the cam" to the cars specs? I have asked him for the TC and cam spec.

Can you fill in some details to finish off this thread? What exactly is this truck? Rear axle ratio? Rear tire size? Glad it worked out. It will be so much nicer to cruise in overdrive.

93 V/8 Dakota. 3.91 auto overdrive. Nice around the suburbs. 98 360 B3500 van 4.88 auto over drive. That's the hot setup for heavy towing at 55 mph overdrive off. 64 413 New Yorker 2.92. Sweet at 80 all day. And others.
