Two problems. 1. Not sure you can determine the port size form the gasket alone. 2. The port you care about for performance, is the outlet. The 340 and "good" magnum manifolds have the larges outlet. Sounds like you've already talked yourself into using 318 manifolds, so carry on and enjoy.

About 1978, put a set of cheap BlackJack headers on my otherwise stock 73 Duster 340. They leaked, rattled and hung low, but the car ran almost 3/4 of a second quicker in the quarter, even with a traction problem it didn't have with the stock manifolds.

Step headers? That's a new one on me...it looks like I have some Googling to do. :)

Here's what a 360 Magnum looks like dressed like a "day 2" 340. I used all LA front, including alternator, all brackets, power steering ,pulleys, valve covers etc. One ***** was to get the bypass hose to fit. Also getting a lower rad hose that worked properly. Let me know if I can help further.

Put in anything you want. Manifolds will just hold you back after you get past a 340 spec cam.

Slight correction. The hole is 2-1/8 on the mag and about 2-1/4 on the good 340 units.

My plan is to use my 318 to get the car sorted out then stroke to 390.. only thing i'm wasting is the cam which isn't a huge deal.. current heads/intake will go to the new motor.. nice to see some dyno numbers of a 390.. from what i'm told a 408 will do double the power though.. (a joke...)

Sounds about right. You just cannot preach headers to some folks though. They won't have any of it.

Oh and when running this model you MUST, MUST have headers to crest the 300 HP line or you may not make it. Stock 340 manifolds capped you at about 290 HP

...its a depends no blanket one size fits all headers will gain this much all the times ect etc etc etc.... A lot of times ppl have say 340 manifolds with stock head pipe thats 2 inch off manifold pinch 1/2 inch around torsion bar then goes into 2 1/4 pipe drivers side. They take all that off...

I’m not questioning the stock 340 cams have a following. That’s why I requested responses of members running Solid Lift Cams with manifolds.

You two guys above, the low compression years of the 340 and all the HP 4bbl 360 engines (IIRC) used the same early 340. 350’s could be had with a smaller 2bbl cam and a 4bbl. The exhaust valves for the 340 & 360 are and have always been a 1.60. The intakes for the later 340’s and all 360’s...

I was surprised at how mean and nasty it sounded with the manifolds! I agree a 340 or 360!

Of course it is much better places to spend 1k bucks for tti 12hp nitrous 900 bucks=rocket ship on demand light weight

I personally wouldn’t try double exhaust gaskets. It may hold, but I’m not too warm and fuzzy on the idea. Worth a shot! I second that. Even on a very mild cam and compression engine, it’s a winner.

No, I installed them in 1984. Likely bought them in 1978 or so. They have the same port openings as the driver's side so maybe they were for later 340 and 360s with the non HP manifolds?

I've never looked at a 318 and 340 log manifold side by side before. Interesting how the 340 manifold is larger, outlet diameter excluded. Makes me think the factory saw value in making it bigger.

I took the photo 16 years ago. About 9 years after this photo, I ditched the 2bbl setup and 318 manifolds with a 4bbl and 340 exhaust manifolds.

Depends on the combination. The stock 340 and 360s were designed to incorporate manifolds. Very mild builds. "Just" bolting headers on and nothing else would garner very little, unless you also upped the ante with the carburetor.
